"Ideas of Order" on The Dividing Line focuses on complex progressive rock. The show goes back to the early experimental "art rock" of bands like Tangerine Dream, King Crimson and Pink Floyd, explores some of the ambitious, more recent work of groups like The Flower Kings, Thieves' Kitchen, et al., and plunges ahead to current music, some of it too new (or too adventurous) to have much of a public presence (a situation we will endeavor to address). The name for the show comes from a volume of Wallace Stevens poetry. Your host Stochastic (aka, Glenn Cornett), is a biotechnology entrepreneur with a passion for innovation both in science and in the arts (innovations in the former being a source of income and in the latter serving as a remedy for income). A member of the "prog by proxy" sub-generation, he grew up listening to his older brother's music (Emerson, Lake and Palmer, et al.) and still thinks those bands were great. In college, he was one of the few chemistry majors with a key to the electronic music laboratory ("the Synclavier was a bit more interesting than some of my thermodynamics homework", he says). Time at medical school involved further experimentation and band work ("though the last two years pretty much involved being flogged in the clinics", he recalls), and his neuroscience dissertation was on deep brain responses to musical stimuli. Graduate school (as well as some subsequent "real job" activities at McKinsey and elsewhere) involved work in complexity science (where he learned the word "stochastic" and adopted it as a reasonable descriptor of his lifestyle - "No one has contradicted me yet on that one", he claims). Glenn's enjoyment of innovation and complexity (two fundamental characteristics of prog) will drive much of the programming for this show. Stochastic has been an avid Dividing Line listener for a while, and is thrilled with the opportunity to "give something back".
