The year was 1974 or '75 and shows like "In Concert"
and "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert" were regular fare on late night
TV. We saw a wide range of acts including Steppenwolf, Kiki Dee (!)
and our first glimpse of Rush. One day the future "OldRUSHfan" and I
took our weekly trip to the record store and I asked the sales droid
for an album by "Slade". The helpful fellow turned up his nose a bit
and said he didn't think they had any, "But if you are looking for
'that kind of thing' these guys are much better," and he pulled two
albums out of the record bins.
What he handed me were Queen and Queen II. Being the
trusting sort I bought them both. Upon arriving home I plunked the debut
effort down on my crappy turntable. It was months before Queen II got a listen because the first album kept getting played over and over again!
In the summer I went to wrestling camp and the juke box in the rec hall seemed to be stuck on "Killer Queen." By the time "Bohemian
Rhapsody" blew up everyone's radio in late '75 I was primed to be a life-long
Queen fan.
Still, like many I sort of lost touch with the band over the last years of Freddie's life. When Freddie Mercury died the coverage brought back many memories of those unforgettable songs featuring that inimitable voice. I have made a point to work the music of Queen into my Chaos Theory playlists, but for awhile I've been thinking that they deserved more, a whole show, even just one
that is an hour a week.
So please join me for a weekly indulgence. Put your feet up, take a warm bath, maybe get a nice facial......treat yourself to "Queen For A Day"!
