The first in a new occasional series of podcasts from the creators of The European Perspective, and going out in the same weekly 'slot' on The Dividing Line!
'Castaways' is inspired by (some may say ripped off from) the long-running and popular show on BBC Radio 4, 'Desert Island Discs', in which guests are asked to select the pieces of music they would take with them if they had to live alone on a desert island. As you might expect I've 'progged up' the format somewhat, and will be asking my guests to choose ten albums they'd have with them on their sojourn, together with a selection of individual songs to comprise a 'mix tape' - basically, enough music to fill a European Perspective length show.
My first guest is Martin Morgan, the driving force behind Yak, and, indeed, the first ever guest on The European Perspective way back in November 2008. As well as choosing an excellent selection for the show, Martin also talk a little about the next Yak album, The Quest For The Stones, and joins me in making short work of quite a lot of Hob Nobs.

A whizz around Europe this month with new albums from Hawkwind (UK), Fourteen Twentysix (Netherlands), Eris Pluvia (Italy), Conqueror (Italy), The Black Noodle Project (France), Ciccada (Greece) and Fonderia (Italy again!). The somewhat cosmopolitan theme is maintained throughout, with Hungary, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, Romania and Germany also represented - hardly anything British, in fact, apart from some classic Wishbone Ash and a track from Strangefish's first album.

This week's episode of The European Perspective is a sort of 'listening party' for the release of the new album by English proggers Tinyfish, entitled the Big Red Spark. Three years in the making this partly conceptual record cuts completely new ground for the band, and also for the genre in general, incorporating the Tinyfish brand of modern progressive rock with Robert Ramsay's innovative use of narrative elements in both song lyrics and spoken word, and is most certainly one of the key releases of the year.
I've been lucky enough to have the collaboration of all of the members of the band, and particularly Simon Godfrey and Robert Ramsay, who effectively co-present this show with me. First there's a review of the Tinyfish catalogue to date, with the tracks selected by the members of the band's internet forum, The Fishtank. Then we examine some of the influences though a compilation of songs selected by each band member as being either influential on them as musicians, or on the Big Red Spark album itself. Finally we present the new album in its entirety, with insights from Rob and Simon on its production and content. There's also a couple of surprises along the way!
