This week's edition is given over entirely to a varied and highly enjoyable selection of songs from Ed O'Brien, one of The European Perspective's most faithful listeners, and a huge fan of progressive rock in its many forms. Thanks, Ed, for the selection, and for your loyalty right from the early days of the show. I've really enjoyed listening to these tracks, and I'm sure everyone else will, too.

« Reply #139 on: September 24, 2011, 02:09:53 PM »

This week's show features an exclusive interview with Christina Booth and Rob Reed from Magenta, one of the UK's best-loved progressive rock bands, who are releasing their fifth studio album, Chameleon, on 10th October. In the show I talk to Tina and Rob about the band's history, their musical influences, and about the new album, as well as playing music from the Magenta back catalogue and some tracks from the new record - including a world premiere for the 'big finish' song, Red.

Chameleon can be pre-ordered from the album's website where you can either order the CD, or enrol into the Chameleon project, which gives you tracks to download prior to the release, a bonus DVD, and lots of other goodies!

Thanks to Pete 'Pedro' Waite, who was instrumental in setting up the interview - check out his remix of Glitterball by joining the project.

Phew, no less than SIX brand new releases this week, all of them very, very good! No problem putting together a playlist this week, then, except that it was a bit of a mission deciding which songs to play from each of them. I've also managed to squeeze in some other great releases which have emerged while The European Perspective has been in 'specials land'.

Not only that, but a brace of songs so new that they're not even released yet - the lead track from Manning's excellent forthcoming release, Margaret's Children, and a sneak preview from the next Also Eden album, Think Of The Children. Go to the website and preorder! And while you're on the web, get copies of all the other albums I played this week, too - your bank manager will forgive you, honest...

The European Perspective #135 - Manning: Margaret's Children
« Reply #143 on: October 29, 2011, 08:49:49 AM »

In what is becoming an annual event, the bulk of this week's show is an extended interview with Guy Manning, whose new album, Margaret's Children, is released on F2 Records on 7th November. A sequel to 2006's Anser's Tree, this new release comprises seven songs about more of Margaret Montgomery's family, and Guy gives us a fascinating insight into the characters, the writing process, and the making of the album.

In no way do we end up sounding like two grumpy old men complaining about the state of modern music...

Margaret's Children can be ordered from the Manning website, and if you want to see Guy and the band playing live, you can do so at Danfest in Leicester on 26th November (playing an acoustic set), or at The Corporation in Sheffield on 10th December, the official album launch show.

Elsewhere in the show, some music I simply fancied playing, and the very active competition for the best Yes album of the year!
1. Yes - Close To The Edge (18:41) from Close To The Edge, 1972
2. Cosmograf - Bakelite Switch (7:36) from When Age Has Done Its Duty, 2011
3. Frost* - Dear Dead Days (6:51) from Experiments In Mass Appeal, 2008
4. Tinyfish - Why VHF? (8:19) from Curious Things, 2009
5. Manning - Margaret Montgomery (1581- ) from Anser's Tree, 2006

Interview with Guy Manning, featuring extracts from the new Manning album, Margaret's Children, released on 7th November 2011.

6. White Willow - Searise (13:11) from Terminal Twilight, 2011
7. Kong Krampons - The Night Watch (4:41) from Clueless and Slightly Slack, remastered, 2011
8. Yes - Fly From Here (23:43) from Fly From Here, 2011
9. Glass Hammer - Nothing Box (10:54) from Cor Cordium, 2011
10. Wobbler - In Orbit (12:30) from Rites At Dawn, 2011
11. Karmakanic - 1969 (14:13) from In A Perfect World, 2011

The European Perspective #137 - Cardiacs and Affectionate Friends
« Reply #145 on: November 13, 2011, 02:38:59 AM »

It's doubtful that any rock band has ever polarized opinion more than the UK's Cardiacs. Starting life as Cardiac Arrest in 1977, they were a unique force in music throughout the eighties and beyond, fusing progressive rock, punk, pop and goodness knows what else into a mix that's been imitated by many since and surpassed by none.

The Cardiacs' fan base is fanatical, and there's none more so than my guest on The European Perspective this week, Adrian Bell. Adrian published his second book, Aylesbury Bolton Wolverhampton Hove: A Little Man And 101 Cardiacs Gigs, earlier this year; part memoir of years following the band, part a tribute to the people who follow them, and part recollection of what it was like to be a progressive rock fan through the eighties and nineties. In this extended show Adrian talks about the book and chooses his favourite Cardiacs songs, music by related bands, and also his favourite progressive rock music through the years.

Adrian's book - a fantastic read, highly recommended - is available on eBay by searching for Cardiacs.

I'm back in the DJ's chair again this week, for a selection of prime meaty cuts from an eclectic mix of new progressive rock albums from all over Europe. This show is also a mini-celebration of Pure Reason Revolution's 2006 album, The Dark Third, now regarded as a mini-classic, and played by the band in its entirety on their recent farewell tour.

Happy birthday Tiina!

Also, please do vote in the European Perspective/Electric Garden Album of 2011 poll - the form can be found here - with a chance to win a copy of the DVD made at last year's EG festival. The results will be broadcast in a special over the Christmas weekend, and we'd love to hear what you think the best albums of the year have been!

The European Perspective #140 - Festive Fifty 2011 Part 1
« Reply #148 on: December 18, 2011, 12:24:01 AM »

Back this week with part 1 of The European Perspective Festive Fifty - tracks from the fifty most popular albums of 2011, as voted for by you, the show's listeners!

It's the second time I've run the poll - in conjunction with Ken Foster from Electric Garden Festival - and this year it's been even more successful, with nearly two hundred listeners voting for their favourite five albums. Next week Ken and I will be counting down the top twenty, and this week I'm playing tracks from numbers 50 down to 21. Some great music, including many of my personal favourites from the year - Manning, Wobbler and Sky Architect, to name but three.

The title 'Festive Fifty' is shamelessly stolen from John Peel, a legend in broadcasting, and very sadly missed. His laconic wit and sponsorship of young talent made him a true icon, and he's been an inspiration to many broadcasters, myself included. Wherever you are, John, have a good Christmas...

Enjoy the show - and don't forget to tune in for the top twenty over Christmas!
1. Sky Architect - Treebird (09:15) from A Dying Man's Hymn, 2011
