A distinctly British flavour to this week's selection, with only a selection from the new Nemo album, Barbares, from outside the British Isles. There are also songs from the DeeExpus project, an exciting new neo-progressive band from the North East of England, some vintage Anthony Phillips, and a few surprises along the way - surprises to the DJ as much as to the listener!

01. The Albion Band - Time To Ring Some Changes (2:51) from Rise Up Like The Sun, 1978
02. From The Cradle...To The Grave (19:29) from Rhetoric, 2005
03. DeeExpus Project - Seven Nights (6:33) from Half Way Home, 2008
04. DeeExpus Project - Half Way Home (17:11) from Half Way Home, 2008
05. Anthony Phillips - The Geese And The Ghost (15:51) from The Geese And The Ghost, 1977
06. Nemo - Le Film De Ma Vie (7:40) from Barbares, 2008
07. Nemo - L'armee Des Ombres (10:05) from Barbares, 2008
08. Sensitive To Light - Real World (7:41) from From The Ancient World, 2007
09. National Health - Brujo (10:17) from National Health, 1978
10. Magrathea - Galadriel (6:19) from Legend, 2004
11. Nik Kershaw - Running Scared (5:04) from Radio Musicola, 1986
12. John Martyn - Solid Air (5:46) from Solid Air, 1973
13. Tears For Fears - Badman's Song (8:33) from The Seeds Of Love, 1989
14. Pendragon - Indigo (13:44) from Pure, 2008
15. Parallel Or 90 Degrees - Afterlifecycle Sequence (27:46) from A Can Of Worms, 2008
16. The Albion Band - Gresford Disaster (10:49) from Rise Up Like The Sun, 1978

Enjoy!

This episode of The European Perspective is dedicated to the memory of Denis Elliott, my father, who passed away in hospital on 20th March 2009 after a protracted illness.

My Dad wouldn't have described himself as a music lover - if he listened to anything, it was mostly classical music (Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Dvorak's New World are the two records I remember lying around a lot when I was very young), though he did have a soft spot for Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. But he never discouraged me from following my own musical tastes, let me play whatever I wanted about the house, and only ever nudged me to "turn that bloody noise down" when it was very loud. Although distance meant that I didn't see much of my Dad in recent years, I'm going to miss him terribly.

This week's show is a bit of a hotch-potch of mainly newer music, including new releases from Tinyfish and Shadowland, a track from the most recent Spaghetti Epic, and after the excellent feedback from last week's airing, a bit more Argos.

06. Hoggwash - Road Of Many Challenges (10:05) from The Last Horizon, 2007
07. Yesterdays - Suite Pauline (20:04) from The Spaghetti Epic 3 - The Great Silence, 2009

The European Perspective #17 - 1969
« Reply #19 on: March 29, 2009, 03:08:05 AM »

Forty years ago King Crimson released their debut album In The Court of the Crimson King, to great acclaim. Considered by many to be the first true progressive rock record, it came at a time when the vinyl LP record was beginning its ascendency as the medium of choice for 'serious' musicians. The five or six years that followed 1969 were the Golden Age of progressive rock, but as the selection of music in this show demonstrates the seeds were already well and truly sown before the start of the new decade.

This show also explores what is meant by 'progressive' and opposed to simply 'prog'. Groups as diverse as Led Zeppelin, Fairport Convention, The Pentangle and Cream were all considered, at the time, to fall into the progressive category, though whether this is because the form wasn't yet fully defined or because opinions narrowed as time went on is a matter of heated debate to this day. What characterises all of this music is a forward-looking mentality, a desire to stretch the boundaries of the three-minute pop song, to incorporate many musical influences, and most of all, to make music that stimulates as well as entertains.

01. King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man (7:23) from In The Court Of The Crimson King, 1969

This week's show is the true product of a disordered mind. Songs from the new albums by Wobbler and Blind Ego, back-to-back with a dip into the Manning back-catalogue and some vintage Strawbs - and then slap-bang in the middle of it all a very odd diversion into a parallel universe!

For this show I am once again joined by my co-compere, Huw, in another pot-pourri - some may say hotch-potch - of tunes old and new. There’s a good helping of the new album by Roine Stolt’s side-project, Agents Of Mercy (also featuring Unifaun’s Nad Sylvan on vocals), some 1990s-vintage Swedish prog from Sinkadus, and a goodly dose of Pure Reason Revolution. We also attempt to push back the prog envelope by playing artists such as Goldfrapp and Peaking Goddess Collective - or maybe we just like broadcasting freaky tunes…

01. The Tangent - Forsaken Cathedrals (4:53) from A Place In The Queue, 2006
02. Van Der Graaf Generator - Arrow (9:48) from Godbluff, 1975
03. Agents Of Mercy - The Fading Ghosts Of Twilight (7:29) from The Fading Ghosts of Twilight, 2009
04. Agents Of Mercy - The Unwanted Brother (5:46) from The Fading Ghosts of Twilight, 2009
05. Agents Of Mercy - Afternoon Skies (4:02) from The Fading Ghosts of Twilight, 2009
06. Sinkadus - Attestupan (12:09) from Aurum Nostrum, 1997
07. Sinkadus - Jag Anglamarks Bane (13:47) from Cirkus, 1999
08. Solstice - Salu (5:24) from Circles, 1996
09. Solstice - Circles (8:32) from Circles, 1996
10. Ozric Tentacles - Tidal Convergence (7:14) from Erpland, 1990
11. The Peaking Goddess Collective - Hyperspace (8:45) from Organika, 2007

14. Agents Of Mercy - People Like Us (4:55) from The Fading Ghosts of Twilight, 2009
15. Bat For Lashes - Daniel (4:11) from Two Suns, 2009
16. Goldfrapp - A&E (3:18) from Seventh Tree, 2008

The European Perspective #21 - 1970
« Reply #23 on: April 25, 2009, 12:36:49 PM »

Back to 1970 this week for the second in the EP series of annual retrospectives of the 'classic' prog years. After the seminal releases of the previous year 1970 saw followups from King Crimson - no less than two albums in the year - Yes and Pink Floyd, together with debuts from acts who would later be regarded as pillars of the progressive rock community - Gentle Giant and Emerson Lake and Palmer. There's also a selection of less often heard material from early European bands, together with music from the 'hard and soft' ends of the spectrum proving how diverse the genre was then.

This show is also very, very long...

01. Yes - No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed (4:53) from Time And A Word, 1970

Welcome to another excitement-packed edition of the European Perspective, the only progressive rock music show made with the goodness of real butter!

Two new features this week. First up there's "Old And New", comparing and contrasting two very different albums from very different eras - in this edition from 1968 and 2009. You'll have to tune in to find out which ones.

Secondly, the very first "Folk Perspective". I've played folky-style stuff in the past, but this new feature makes that connection more explicit, seeking to shatter into a thousand tiny pieces The Bishie's assertion that folk and prog are diametrically opposed to each other.

Elsewhere it's the usual selection of British and Euopean stuff, old and new, hand-picked by your very own prog visionary, The Amazing Wilf!

Another mixed bag this week, including music by Yes and Magenta on Old and New, and a sprightly selection of folky prog, mostly recent. I also look at one of the 'lost' English progressive rock bands from the seventies, Gracious, as recommended to me by Johan from Sweden - many thanks for that, Johan!

Apart from all that it's business as usual - fine melodic stuff from fine British and European progressive rock bands. And of course, all comments welcome at the usual address, wilf@thedividingline.com
