The European Perspective #158
« Reply #167 on: July 29, 2012, 03:32:05 AM »
My carefully designed plans for this week's show were almost sabotaged completely when Mike Oldfield popped up at the Olympic opening ceremony and I went into major squealing fanboy mode. However, I've managed to limit myself to playing one piece from the maestro, and left most of the rest of the show as was.

And what a show it is! Forty-five minutes of Henry Cow and Art Bears! New music from Big Big Train, Anglagard, and many others!! A splendid continuation of The Chain from one of the show's longest-serving listeners, Phil Bradshaw!!!

On a more sobering note, July saw the passing of one of rock music's true musical giants, Jon Lord, so I've also included a sequence celebrating his huge talent.
1. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells {Part One} (26:01) from Tubular Bells, 1973
2. Anglagard - Ur Vilande (15:47) from Viljars ôga, 2012
3. Deep Purple - Highway Star (06:45) from Made In Japan, 1972
4. Jon Lord - Burntwood (04:02) from Before I Forget, 1982
5. Jon Lord Blues Project - When a Blind Man Cries (05:17) from Live, 2011
6. Big Big Train - Judas Unrepentant (07:18) from English Electric Part 1, 2012
7. Asia - No Religion (06:36) from XXX, 2012
8. Producers - Garden Of Flowers (Alternative) (05:57) from Made In Basing Street, 2012
9. Yes - The More We Live - Let Go (04:54) from Union, 1991
10. Chris Squire - Safe (Canon Song) (14:57) from Fish Out Of Water, 1975
11. Steve Hillage - Aftaglid (14:44) from Fish Rising, 1975
12. Henry Cow - Amygdala (06:58) from Leg End, 1973
13. Henry Cow - Half Asleep; Half Awake (08:00) from Unrest, 1974
14. Henry Cow - History & Prospects: The Decay of Cities (06:56) from Western Culture, 1979
15. Henry Cow/Slapp Happy - Beautiful as the Moon - Terrible as an Army with Banners (07:02) from In Praise of Learning, 1975
16. Slapp Happy/Henry Cow - Bad Alchemy (03:07) from Desperate Straights, 1975
17. Art Bears - The Dance (05:10) from Hopes And Fears, 1978
18. Art Bears - The Slave (03:38) from Winter Songs, 1979
19. Art Bears - The Song of the Martyrs (04:08) from The World As It Is Today, 1981
20. Anima Mundi - Jagannath Orbit (11:44) from Jagannath Orbit, 2008
21. Il Bacio Della Medusa - Indignatio - Infedeli in Terra Santa (08:04) from Deus Lo Vult, 2012

The European Perspective #160
« Reply #169 on: August 25, 2012, 11:08:12 AM »
There's a distinctly English feel to this week's show, with a brace of tracks from Big Big Train's game-changing album, English Electric Part 1, and a whole raft of vintage Canterbury-scene bands.

But it wouldn't be The European Perspective without a bit of variety, so there's plenty of great music from mainland Europe too.

The next show will be a special, based around my recent interview with Big Big Train and featuring lots of music from their new album. The show will stream on 2nd September, and I'm hoping to have a bit of a listening party in the DLBN chat room when it starts at 4.00 am PST (that's mid-day BST, if you're in the UK!). Do come along if you can.
1. Big Big Train - The First Rebreather (08:32) from English Electric Part 1, 2012

The European Perspective #161 - Big Big Train & English Electric
« Reply #170 on: September 01, 2012, 05:59:44 AM »
In this special bonus edition of The European Perspective I interview Greg Spawton, Andy Poole, David Longdon and Dave Gregory from the English progressive rock band Big Big Train, on the eve of the release of their much-anticipated new album, English Electric Part 1.

Expect sizeable chunks of the album interspersed with the chat, and a sneak preview of material from the second installment of English Electric which won't be released until 2013.

Thanks hugely to Greg, Andy, David and Dave for a very enjoyable afternoon, and of course for the music!

The European Perspective #163 - Manning: Akoustik
« Reply #172 on: September 23, 2012, 02:23:31 AM »
It's that time of year again! An interview with old friend Guy Manning, who talks about his new album, Akoustik, featuring re-renderings of songs from the Manning back catalogue as performed by the acoustic 'format' of the band.

Guy and I also chat about the full electric band's upcoming performance at this year's Summer's End festival, taking place 28th-30th September at the town hall in Lydney-upon-Severn. The rest of this week's show features tracks from artists who'll be playing, and I once you've heard them I think you'll agree that the line up is looking at strong as ever.

You can get your hands on Akoustik - highly recommended - here, and if you haven't already got your Summer's End ticket, you can find more details here.

The European Perspective #164 - Folk Perspectives
« Reply #173 on: October 06, 2012, 05:40:36 AM »
I'm feeling utterly progged out after last weekend's Summer's End festival, not to mention having had a very busy week since coming back, so rather than missing an episode I'm re-running a podcast I made last September called Folk Perspectives. This was supposed to be the first of a series, but the series turned out not to be - it's called biting off more than you can chew!

As the title suggests the content of this show is very folk music based, or at least folk-influenced. I hope you all enjoy the change of pace!

Next week there'll be a special show featuring a long-form interview with Rob Reed of Magenta fame, who'll be talking about the release of his much anticipated Kompendium project, as well as playing some exclusive music from the album and looking at some of the influences that went into the composition and recording.

The following week it's business as usual with plenty of progressive rock, both old and new.

The European Perspective #166
« Reply #175 on: October 19, 2012, 08:07:36 AM »
This week's European Perspective is a special dedicated to my friend and colleague Eric 'Soundman' Arthur. Many of you will know Eric from his excellent Dividing Line show, Love Letters, which is off the air at the moment due to Eric suffering a major stroke a few months back. I'm glad to say that Eric is now recovering, and what better way to hasten his return by mangling his show's concept - live recordings - so heavily that he'll want to rush back to stop me.

For the first time this week I've collated the playlist by putting a 'shout' (isn't that what the young people say these days?) on something called 'Face Book' (I think), so at least the music is quality. Thanks to everyone who chose songs...hope you all enjoy seeing your names in lights (so to speak), and Eric - enjoy the show, guv!

« Reply #176 on: November 03, 2012, 01:24:50 PM »
It's been a year for anniversary editions, remixes and what-not, and there's a fair share of that going on in this episode of The European Perspective. Expect the usual thrills and spills, together with a selection of fine Italian progressive rock, and a lovely Chain sequence courtesy of our good mate Simon Thompson.

This week also sees the launch of the Listener's Poll for 2012, once again in collaboration with Ken Foster from Aurovine and Electric Garden Festival. Head along to the polling website and vote for your favourite five British and European prog albums of the year. The European Perspective #168 - Prolk!
« Reply #177 on: November 25, 2012, 09:41:23 AM »

The Genesis reunion wasn't going quite as Tony had planned...

“Progressive” and “folk” aren’t words that are used together very often. Surely the whole point of folk music is that it’s backwards-looking, songs about going down t’pit, or riding out one morning fair in the merry month of June and depriving young women of their maidenheads? To quote Alexei Sayle – “songs about whale smuggling in the seventeenth century”?

Well yes – and no! What we understand as folk music is a fairly modern construct in the first place, but many of the musicians who’ve espoused the tag over last five decades – and, indeed, some who’ve had it thrust upon them – have as progressive an outlook as many of yer symphonic rock bands (more so, in some cases).

I’ve always loved folk music, as long as I can remember. I was listening to it before I’d ever heard of Genesis or Yes, and my enjoyment of it never goes away. My mate Chris and I went to see the new lineup of The Albion Band last week, and it was quite possibly the best gig I’ve seen this year…six young musicians making folk and folk-influenced music sound edgy, contemporary and exciting. So I simply had to put together this show. Huw, ever one with the witty phrase, condensed ‘progressive folk’ to simply ‘prolk’ – pronounced ‘proke’.

If you’re not used to the style then you may find it heavy-going in parts, but stick with it, and you may find that patience amply rewarded.

If all that sounds rather evangelical in tone, then apologies. It’ll be business as usual next time.

« Reply #178 on: November 25, 2012, 09:43:46 AM »

"Damn, I didn't vote for Invicta in The European Perspective poll!" (photograph by Neil Palfreyman)

After last week's prolk extravaganza, a slight more conventional European Perspective this time, featuring new releases from Kompendium, The Enid, Rhys Marsh, Nine Stones Close and Jethro Tull (!), an excellent Chain courtesy of Graham Meigh, a wee look back at the Stabbing A Dead Horse tour (musically, at least), a brief foray into the mind of legend and fellow podcaster Ian Fairholm, and more Porcupine Tree than you can shake a big stick at.

Oh, and don't forget to vote in the poll! The European Perspective # 170 - Mogador: Absinthe Tales Of Romantic Vision
« Reply #179 on: December 09, 2012, 07:12:26 AM »

Almost two years to the day since I featured Mogador's All I Am Is Of My Own Making on The European Perspective, I'm delighted to have Richard Allen, the band's drummer and resident non-Italian person, back on to the show to talk about their new release, Absinthe Tales Of Romantic Visions. Plenty of music from the album, as well a fascinating insight into Mogador's writing and recording process, and news about their impending arrival on the live progressive rock scene.

Plenty of new releases, too, including the epic title track from the debut by Corvus Stone and music from London singer/songwriter Tom Slatter's new album, Steamlife.

And thanks to Simon Thompson for continuing The Chain!
