Not a promotional gimmick here. The future of "Guilty Pleasures" is on hold for now.
The reason: On Tuesday evening my internet was down. Woke up Wednseday and it was still down so I called Verizon to find out what was wrong. Three hours and higher blood pressure gauging later it turns out someone at verizon 'accidently' cancelled my DSL. Admittedly their mistake. Two more hours of fussin' 'n cussin' and the end result is that DSL has to be re-ordered for me and the time frame looks to be around October 1, 2003. Dial-up hell for now for the 'ol Grunster. Now, in my area, I am the first person who was able to get DSL. Ordered it one day and 3 months later it started. This was after six updates of "You DSL service should be operational by [insert date here]". So October 1 is still questionable.
The Alternatives: I could do a show and upload it to the server and have it play. I could play re-runs of past moments. After all, we are talking about maybe 3-4 shows only. I still don't know what I am gonna do. I will keep this message board and email list up to date with what is happening.
When I do return, I will have some interesting items for musical listening consumption. For now, my time in the chat will also be limited as I need to devote the dial-up time to other tasks and can't have the chat program clogging the system.
Thanks for all who have taken the plunge and listened to the show. Some hate it and some love it. It is fun to broadcast and I look forward to more shows.
That just sucks! Hopefully we will still be able to work something out though, as we've had DJs here broadcast on dial-up with a few minor settings changes.
I don't understand why it would take that long. You didn't see a truck pull up and some guys with hard hats jump out and remove the phone lines from your block! Everything is still in place and all hooked up. So what you're waiting for is paper to be pushed from one desk to another. Not even that because it's all on computer. Did it take them several weeks to disconnect you once they decided that's what they were going to do? Of course not. Just a click of a mouse and poof - you're gone. And they admitted it was their mistake? Totally unacceptable! Your service should be restored immediately!

I agree Rene, but I know of what Gruno speaks. My ex didn't pay the bill one month (don't get me started) and it took 2 1/2 weeks for them to "turn it back on." There is virtually nothing we can do.
I was furious to say the least, but you just have to wait it out sometimes right? He might be lucky and get it sooner....but I don't think it's likely
Best of luck Grunie, I know I will miss your show very much...

Well, if the bill doesn't get paid, that's a totally different situation. That's part of the penalty you pay. Most services like your phone and cable charge a reconnection fee, and there's a waiting period. But in this case, it's their fault! In the name of customer service, I'd expect to jump the queue and be reconnected before they activate a single new customer!

I'm in the process of switching DSL providers myself, to http://www.dslextreme.com/ They said 10 days or less to get me hooked up (4 days down so far). I'm not sure if they cover your area but it may be worth a shot.
It took so long to get DSL in my area since I moved here a few years ago. No other provider is here. Verizon owns pretty much each phone line. They rent their lines out in other areas. From what I understand from a friend who works at Verizon is that if you have SBC or another phone provider, they pretty much rent/lease their lines from Verizon. I also need to stick with Verizon because it doesn't interest me to switch all my server info and email contacts. It appears they are able, in this incident, to allow me to retain my old email addy and such. So I just wait.
Who would have thunk we would need to live without our Guilty Pleasures? Little does Verizon realize the number of people they are impacting by their internal screw-up...not that it makes a hill of beans difference to them.
Well, I will have to make the most of this evening when you come up north with Nick. Perhaps the personal visit will have to carry me through the time of no Guilty Pleasures!
