My 15 year old wanted me to rip some CDs to her iPod for her, mostly Pink Floyd stuff that she's starting to get into, but also, the first Arena CD. She always liked Solomon from when I used to play it in the car, she couldn't have been more than 6 when it came out. This is a child who was raised on a steady diet of Marillion and the like, but when she got older, discovered rap, hip-hop, and recently, punk. Like her dad, she has tired of commercial radio. She recently introduced me to Coheed and Cambria, thinking I might like them, which I do. So anyway, she's on her way out the door today, being home from school, and says, "I really like that Arena CD. Can you rip some more for me?" My God, there IS hope for the next generation!
when my two boys were growing up they liked IQ, Ritual, and Genesis many years ago. Now their 17 & 15 and the only similairity with what they listen to now is the Volume. I played my music loud, and now their
Lead by example......like when I played Sonata Arctica one day and my 11 year old was like " WHAT is this??? I love it!! " He brought it to his dad's and drove him nuts with it for a week....hehe...
The next week I sent him there with The Mars Volta.....
Next week...Pain of Salvation........
The quest continues....

teenager
, look out!!! you ain't cooool if you don't like m&m, or any of them 'rap pack'. it has to be a peer pressure thing i guess do you think they actually 'like' that crap? boy, do i sound like my father
There IS hope for some. At age 4 my daughter could name the artist and song title of almost anything we played or on the radio. She accompanied me at age 5 to two concerts...Midnight Oil and Kim Mitchell. Now she's 20 and although she likes some stuff I don't (not rap...some of the punk and goth stuff) we do have a lot of common ground. In fact we still go to concerts together. I went with her and her boyfriend to see A Perfect Circle, and we saw Garbage before that. One of her friends is a big Dream Theater fan. I think the 15-17 age is when they're more likely to go for rap and hip hop, but most grow out of it later. At least that's what happened with my daughter and her friends. I'm beginning to think that the rap & hip hop scene is more of a fashion statement than anything. The kids like it because it's cool to do so.

In the teen years they are desparate for acceptence by their peers. They lose all their individuality trying to be like everyone else. Once they really grow up, they start to come to their senses again.
Someone mentioned that their kids play their music loud. My kids complain that I play mine too loud.
