Joel's surgery
« on: March 16, 2004, 05:55:58 pm »

Grin  Hi all!  This is Joel's sister, Peggy.  He is thinking about all of you and wanted me to post a message.  His surgery went very well.  He is flat on his back in the hospital awake and alert, a little pukey though but he felt a lot better after that. They will probably have him out of bed in a day or 2.  I know he can't wait to get back to his show.  I'm sure you will be hearing from him when he gets home from the hospital probably next week.  Take care and thanks for all the well wishes.

Joel's girlfriend reporting in...
He was finally riding the Demerol wave when the hospital kicked me out at about 1:30 this morning.  The surgery went very well, but today will be the test as to his pain limits. They will want him to try getting up and walking a few steps today. (I'm amazed at the human body, to be able to take that kind of abuse and come back for more!)
I'll keep everyone posted on his progress.
Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support.  It really means a lot to Joel.

You've got a few months to get good and healed up, so do it right. Then comes the summer, and Powder!

Hugs to all the wellwishers. I gave Joel your messages and it put a HUGE smile on his face. Today was a little rough on him, getting up and moving, so reading your messages was a happy diversion.  All my thanks too, makes me happy to see him smile!

Smiley Hoping for Joel to be released from the hospital tomorrow (today really!).
Who wants the gory details?  Ok, anyone who doesn't, avert your eyes now...
41 staples, 8-10 inch incision, more internal stitches too.
(ok to look again)  He has been up and walking each day and several times a day.  He's been remarkable in his recovery, in my opinion. His determination and will are what is getting him through.  Unfortunately, his tolerance for the *drugs* is not so good, so today was a setback.  They switched him to a painkiller that made him violently ill. So he spent his Saturday hallucinating (but it was all Pink Floyd type, so that's ok right?) Then he had me listen to a Porcupine Tree song that he said was what he was feeling. Anyway, he's anxious to be home, hoping for release Sunday, but possibly Monday.  I'm certain he'll be posting soon, but nurse Ratchet, Cool will be monitoring his "computer time" to be sure he's not overextending himself.  Thanks again to all, and hope all is well with everyone!

Keep going strong Joel dude... Enjoy the hallucinating while you can, and while it's legal for you to do so. Smiley  Seriously though, take it easy and we look forward to your return.  In the meantime, try to get as much rest as you can, and that goes for you too Chris!

Cheesy Thanks Shawn! Maybe tomorrow I'll get some rest? Joel had some minor complications today so they're keeping him yet another day.

well, I think it's off warszawa.... voyage 34..the one with the drug propaganda voice over...Joel was certainly on voyage 34, and met himself going both up and down the staircase.
Wait till he tells you of his hallucinations...it's actually very funny.  I'll leave that story for him to tell.
Thanks again!

Joel wanted me to let you all know that he experienced
"Voyage 34".

He hopes to go home today.  1 more test to be done today. I know you will hear from him when he gets home.
