The H. Era Marillion Poll (just for good measure)
« on: August 12, 2004, 03:34:44 pm »

I left off Radiation because there's no way it would get a vote over the other eight, and there's only 8 choices.

My vote goes to Marbles.  Although I've yet to hear Afraid of Sunlight - which I hear is one of their best.

It was kinda a toss up between 3 or 4 that I really like from the choices. But after going with my gut instinct, I had to pick Seasons End because,  like Trick was for Genesis;.....Seasons set the stage for what was yet to come with  H.    Maybe, because SE was supposed to be recorded with Fish, it to me was Marillion at its peak as a band.   (imo,  of course)   Wink

I think Seasons End is more consistent all the way through, a great album. AOS, IMO, has some great songs, especially the 4 in the middle (Afraid of Sunrise thru Beyond You), but Cannibal Surf Babe??? Puh-leeze  Tongue
Brave is also pretty good. Marbles is just plain boring.

Anoraknophobia baby!

Why?  Because if my heart were a ball it really would roll uphill.

Hard choice, I like AOS almost as much as Marbles. The worst one would have been easy...Radiation, I really can't get into that one.

I had a tough time choosing between Seasons End, Anoraknophobia, Afraid of Sunlight and Marbles. In the end, I went with Marbles because of Genie and Ocean Cloud, which are two of my all-time favorite H-era songs.

I just got AOS yesterday - once I listen to it a few times I'll post a review.

Well after one listen I'm not all that impressed.  Gazpacho, Afraid of Sunlight, and Cannibal Surf Babe kind of stand out.  But the rest is pretty dull to me right now.  I love the ambiant stuff like Marbles but AOS just isn't doing it for me after one listen.  Of course I'll give it 4 or 5 more full listens before I pass further judgement.

that was posted two months ago and I still feel pretty much the same.  AoS, Gazpacho, King, and Cannibal Surf Babe are the only tracks I really like a lot - especially AoS.

Lets see here:

Beautiful - boring music and predictable philanthropistic lyrics very unoriginal and just doesn't do anything for me.

Afraid of Sunrise - This one's alright, reminds me of the Hip.  but nothing special.

Out Of This World - the one everyone seems to love...doesn't do it for me.  i've listened to it with the lights out, and with the lights on, i've listened to it in a car, ive listened to it at a bar, i've listen to it near and far, no green eggs and ham.

Beyond You - This one's got a great opening which I find pretty emotional but I don't like the chorus, it doesn't seem to fit.

and the other tracks are among my favorites that band has ever released.  i love half the album, and don't like the other half.

Have you no soul?

Pure emotion from the H-man on that track.

This might be my favorite passage that H has ever sung with Marillion:

"You strong enough to be
Why don't you stand up and say
Give yourself a break
They'll laugh at you anyway
So why don't you stand up and be
Beautiful

Black, white, red, gold, and brown
We're stuck in this world
Nowhere to go
Turnin' around
What are you so afraid of?
Show us what you're made of
Be yourself and be beautiful
Beautiful"

Boring??? Beautiful is a boring song?

Oh well, it would make me happy to hear a boring song once a day then :-)

It might be a good idea to listen this cd again and pay more attention to the lyrics this time, maybe that will change your mind about this cd being boring. If not....then it is just not your taste.

I've listened to this cd well over 20 times.  I like exactly half of it (4/8 songs), but I really think that Beautiful is one ugly mofo of a song.  Beautful fell from the ugly tree hitting every branch as it "fell to the ground." Sounds like the kind of song you'd hear a pack of meandering stoned hippies singing in front of the white house wearing hemp necklaces and sleeping in tents.

my .2 cents.
