Undisputably, Jim has been a major force in the development and success of The Dividing Line, and progressive rock Internet radio. I am sad to see him go, and I wish him all the best.
Jim, thanks for everything you've done for us!

ProgRoots, Sundays @ 7pm Pacific on The Dividing Line
Papas decision to leave is his alone to make, and I appreciate the very adult and non-accusatory way he presented it to his audience last night. His announcement, however, came towards the end of his show, and took us all by surprise. We barely had a chance to absorb the info before he was signing off for the last time. He did say however, that- management willing- he'd like to be able to do a "retrospective" broadcast featuring some of the highlights of his long and distinguished run on the station. I, for one, think this would be the best way to mark PJ's departure from DLBN. It would give us all a chance to say goodbye- and to celebrate the good times we've ALL had with the Matinee. A chance to close this chapter with mutual dignity and respect. I think it would go a long way toward helping us- the audience- charactarize this in our minds as more of a "moving on", rather than a "falling out".
It's my understanding a retrospective is something that PJ not only is willing, but WANTS to do. If it doesn't happen, the conclusion I will draw is that management would not ALLOW it. That would truly be a shame. PJ's show has been a big part of DLBN for a lot of us, and I'd like to be able to participate in a fitting farewell. I'm sure I'm not alone.
That this sux would be an understatement. This is really a sad sad day for us veteran and new dblners. (for me is very similar to the sadness I felt when Neal left SB). We are a family, at least I'd like to think so, and now one member will be missing and surely will be missed . As you all know, Jim is my prog father, a very close and respected friend and I can't think of prog radio without Papa Jim on the air. I know something would come along, we surely haven't heard or read the last of Papa J's Matinee...
Aceptance is something I cannot grab at this moment... Is there ANYTHING we can do to change this??
I think if this is a fait acomplii, that is, a final decision and there's nothing we can do to change it, a restrospective would surely be in order. Yeah, it would be very cool to share all the 'gooffiness' Papa has blessed us with, listening to the DBLN favorites as Papa really led the way in terms of bringing new music to our attention and, last but not least, planning what are we going to do, as this would not be the end of it all, just a chapter of a very thick book. Love you Papa Jim!.
I WAS THINKING, MAN IF THERE WAS A WAY TO DESCRIBE THE MATINEE, WHAT WOULD I SAY.. THEN I REMEMBER WHAT I READ RIGHT HERE AT DBLN...
"Papa J's Matinee is now one of the longest running shows on The Dividing Line, and certainly one of the most, if not THE most popular!
Is it because of host "Papa" Jim Harrel's irresistible personality? Or is it his vast knowledge of progressive rock music and the music industry? Is it his unpredictability and notoriety? Or is it simply the great music he plays and the special shows he has brought to The Dividing Line?
Thanks guys. I got an email today and it looks like I WILL be allowed to do this final show. I'm very glad about that, and I want to assure you that we are parting on the best of terms.
I've been running through many of the experiences we have shared over the past few years in my mind. There is everything from the most dreadful failed comedy bits, to terms and phrases that have become common prog slang. I promise to have something for everyone who has ever listened to the show to relate to. I hope you all will join me as we turn this page in DLBN history.
As I'm sure most everyone has heard by now, PapaJ has decided to move on from DLBN. Jim has been with us since September of 2001 and has put his heart and soul into his show, sharing his passion for music with everyone he came in contact with. His unique and rare ability to bring people together with his friendly and outgoing personality has touched many people around the globe as well as introducing many of them to music they wouldn't have otherwise heard of. Jim has done a huge amount for The Dividing Line in his time with us and I'd like to sincerely thank him for his years of effort and dedication. The one and only PapaJ. I hope everyone will continue to support him in his future endeavors.
On Saturday November 20th Jim will be broadcasting his final Matinee on The Dividing Line. This show will be a retrospective of his time with us. I hope to see everyone there live in chat as a final show of support and thanks for Jim's lasting contributions to not only DLBN, but the genre of progressive rock.
Jim, on behalf of DLBN I'd like to wish you well and thank you for everything you've done. You'll always be welcome here and will forever be a valued part of the history of DLBN.
Looks like I left too early last night. I must say I am in absolute shock, although admittedly not surprised. It's sad that it had to come to this. As was said above, Jim is THE reason a majority of us ended up here, both as listeners and contributers. Long live the Matinee, and thanks for your indescribable contribution to the success of present-day progressive music.
I too signed off a bit early last night and only after PJ said he would make his "big announcement" next week. Sad to see such a successful show leave the DLBN family.
Obviously, PJ will be missed.
Jim, good luck with everything you do in the future.
