Optimizing the site for Firefox?
« on: January 13, 2005, 12:46:30 pm »

I'm using Mozilla Firefox and the homepage takes forever to load. Any plans on optimizing it for other browsers than IE?

Jürgen,

I use both Firefox and Camino (depending on my mood or which one I'm testing at the time) and the site loads fine for me on a broadband connection. I'm pretty sure Rene uses Frontpage for the site, so there's going to be some M$-y stuff (like the java applets), but I don't have any serious problems, and I'm on a Mac ;-)

You may want to make sure you are using Sun's latest Java, and not the crappy MS one (which was found to be illegal anyway).

I'm also using the firefox joy and for me the DLBN site takes the same amount of time to load as it does using Internet Explorer.  it's probably something happening on your end locally.

I use Mozilla Firefox and the page loads for me just as quickly as when I use Internet Explorer.  Actually, loading the page is much quicker and easier with Firefox because I get NO pop-ups when using Firefox, versus the dozens of pop-ups that instantly come flying at me the second I use Internet Explorer.  Exitiing out of all of those pop-ups is a huge time-waster and incredibly frustrating.  There is one weird thing with Firefox and DLBN that I've noticed;  the area where the chatters are listed is blank boxes with Firefox.   There is the accurate number of boxes but no names appear.  I have to click on my mouse and hold it and drag it down and "highlight" the boxes for the names to appear.  I do notice a few little strange "quirks" like that with Firefox on occasion, but again, no pop-ups, EVER!   Smiley

On a side note;  thanks to Lurker and Mary and Brad and Lorena who have made sure I know I am always welcome at their shows.   It's such a pleasure to listen to your shows and to chat with good people and to enjoy great tunes and share some laughs.

I never have pop-ups on IE.

Got me a good blocker and now I'm feeling the joy!  Cheesy

What blocker do you use, if you don't me asking?  Because although there are only a few very minor glitches with Firefox, at times, the glitches can be annoying.  I might consider using IE again if I knew of a really good blocker to use.

I have this Google toolbar with an automatic popup blocker. It works really well.

Trust me, you don't want to go back to Internet Explorer if you can avoid it.  It's got a lot of security holes and is much more likely to accidentally allow spyware & adware on your system.  That's what's causiing all your popups.  If you go to download.com and get "Adaware Personal" and "Spybot Search & Destroy" you can use  both those applications to remove all that horrid stuff.  In my mind there's no question that firefox will prevent this from happening in the future.  Since fixing people's computers is my job, I put firefox on every outgoing system to ensure the end user doesn't have to worry about anything.  Just my 2 cents. Smiley

By the way thanks for mentioning that issue with the chat page.  I was trying to expariment with the colors of the channel report to match the site.but failed miserably.  FIxing that is on the list of things to do.

Hey girls, the computer illiterate here.  Roll Eyes

Seems I just forgot to tell Java that I switched to Firefox a few months ago. Wink
Everything seems to work okay now. Oh, and Joel, I'm using J2SE 1.4.2. Is that the latest version?

See you in chat!  Grin

Jürgen,

Looking here, there is, apparently, an updated JRE 1.5.0. Also, for you chatters using the Fox and Java, you might consider the Chatzilla Extension. Regardless of versions, updates, systems, whatever, java really does suck and should be avoided whenever possible.

I agree with and value your 2 cents on that, believe me, because I DESPISE pop-ups!  That's what I love about Firefox.  I get no pop-ups, not one, EVER!  On very rare occasions I will use IE and the pop-ups are absolutely horrendous.  When I use IE, I end up spending half my time cursing and trying to rid my screen of pop-ups.  It's beyond annoying.  But I like I said, occasionally I will find a small glitch with Firefox, such as the one I mentioned about the chat page.  You're welcome for the mention of it. It didn't really occur to me that it would be helpful to anyone when I mentioned it.  It would be nice if it got fixed, because it is a slight (only slight) nuisance to have to click the mouse and highlight the chat page to see the chatters.  Not a big deal, but it would be nice if it worked properly.
