www.dbpoweramp.com is the place to get a good ripper / converter. Just download the free music converter and it comes with a great ripping application. All you need to do is encode your mp3s at 256kbps and you'll be laughing.
Today, I d/l the program on my new hard drive. Unfortunately, they now have a 30 day-trial on the mp3 encoder. Guess I'll try another program first before paying 14 bucks for registration.

I use Exact Audio Copy to rip CDs to my hard drive. Sometimes I'll use iTunes. Both have done a satisfactory job and both were free programs. As for bitrate, anything over 160 should be more than adequate.

That's only the 'lame' mp3 encoder. If you donload the 'blade' mp3 codec that's still free.
