Chet Helms RIP
« on: June 26, 2005, 10:56:25 am »

"Chet Helms, a towering figure in the 1960s Bay Area music scene who brought Janis Joplin to San Francisco and ran the Avalon Ballroom during the Summer of Love, died early Saturday after suffering a stroke last week. He was 62."

I was friends with Chet for several years, & he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet! We would invite each other to concerts over those years & you would be suprised how much current or new music he was into. Chet saw Fish at Slim's in SF with us during the '97 US tour, among other shows.  The funniest gig was going to a Dream Theater show when they came to SF...with one of the original "hippies" surrounded by prog-metal fans & enjoying himself as much as the headbanging, clad-in-black kids around him.

He died yesterday morning...
