December 29th, 2010

With a mammoth year coming to a close it's only right that I present a mammoth Behind The Lines! Personally, I experienced a lot of amazing things this year including The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics right outside my window. Once upon a time there was a lonely bit (a 1 for anyone curious). This bit found itself, somewhat inexplicably to its way of thinking, hurtling through time and space through a tubular structure to a mysterious destination far away and unknown. As it passed through the lands of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, if finally found itself headed at break neck speeds towards Quebec (even though it had no neck and spoke no French). The lonely bit had had had quite enough of this unnerving and overwhelming voyage so by the time it hit Montreal it was ready for a stiff drink, except didn’t know about drinks thus was forced to be content with the feeling of relief that accompanied the apparent end of this emotionally overwhelming ordeal. With said assumption fresh in its little bit mind, the shock it felt when it found out that a strange box in Montreal just copied it thousands of times over and over again was immense! Before the bit could say 0 it found itself copied many times and thrown in succession with many other similar yet slightly different bits to all corners of the globe. And all the bits, no longer lonely since they now had each other for company within the great tubular structures, flowed into many computers and into mobile devices. They all now knew the nature of these devices with their newly found collective knowledge. “Don't worry about saving these songs!
And if one of our instruments breaks,
it doesn't matter.

In July of this year the prog scene saw the release of “Speak” from Jason Hart’s “I and Thou” from New York City.  Jason , who is currently playing keyboards with Renaissance and having worked with artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Karen Ann and others, met with overwhelmingly favourable reviews of this debut release, Jason joins us to discuss the album and the voyage of its creation!

Often through my life I have the good fortune of meeting many excellent people.   During conversations I'm regularly asked about what DLBN is all about and I always struggle to explain it succinctly and eloquently.  After all, it's the ever present question that is always asked by music enthusiasts everywhere yet seems to have no definitive answer.   What is progressive rock?  According to Wikipedia it's a genre of music "intended to break the boundaries of traditional rock music by bringing in a greater and more eclectic range of influences, including free-form and experimental compositional methods, as well as new technological innovations."   True, but even that definition has changed over the years and the Wikipedia article quoted above has multiple flagged issues.  This edition of Behind The Lines is the first in a series of what will be my own attempt to musically answer this question.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
