Did you know that Pink Floyd recorded a Christmas song? You do now. What's even better, you can hear it for yourself on the latest special broadcast "Christmas on Planet Progopolis!" It's that time of year again where we drag out the old treasure trove of non-traditional Holiday tunes, and mix it up with some fun new discoveries to deliver a sonic assault guaranteed to coax out the kid inside. If you're not in the spirit yet, you will be after this. Some of the show highlights include...

* Pink Floyd's "Merry Christmas Tune"
* "Jingle Bell Prog" featuring Steven Wilson, Fish, Adrian Belew, and Shawn Bishop
* Proggy seasonal classics from ELP, Genesis, Marillion, The Who, Jethro Tull, Queen, and Riversea
* A special rare performance by C3PO and R2D2
* Vince's scabies scare and embarrasing doctor's office visit

At long last and in true Academy Award/Emmy/Grammy fashion – with the notable exception that we don’t pick our favorites based on how much money they make – we finally name our picks for the top 10 best albums of 2010, and play several selections from each. Congratulations to all of the artists who were chosen, and an even bigger “thank you” for sharing your music with us. If you dig the music you hear on this show, support the artists by buying the music and spreading the word. The entire three hours of this podcast will be available for download in mp3 format or streaming audio at http://www.thedividingline.com/p for a short time. Come listen and discover a few artists you’ve probably never heard.

#10 California Guitar Trio – Andromeda
#9 Mr. Mister – Pull
#8 Rational Diet – On Phenomena and Existences
#7 Simeon Harris – eScape
#6 The Knife (with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock) – Tomorrow, In a Year
#5 Matt Stevens – Ghost
#4 Royksopp – Senior
#3 Donny Who Loved Bowling – Screeching and Exploding
#2 Big Big Train – Far Skies, Deep Time
#1 American Hollow – Whisper Campaign

Bonus song: Shawn Bishop – Blood Bank

In 1971, a British prog rock band by the name of Spring recorded their one and only album. Forty years later, that self-titled masterpiece is still celebrated as a classic representation of early 70s prog rock. This is owed in great part to the band's heavy use of mellotron, which serves to make their eponymous album a rare snapshot of a time in musical history that's never been repeated. On this episode of Progopolis we ring in the arrival of spring (the season) with a 40th anniversary airing of Spring's eponymous album. Also in this episode...

The music of Moonbound has been described as "hooky 80s influenced pop-rock with progressive influences" -- but the word hooky doesn't do it justice. This stuff is positively infectious. On this week's episode of the progressive rock podcast Progopolis, we celebrate the new release from Moonbound, a project helmed by Fabio Trentini and featuring the notable contributions of Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mr. Mister), Markus Reuter (Centrozoon, Stick Men), Michi Dei Rossi (Le Orme), and Dave Gregory (XTC). On the latest episode of Progopolis, we discuss news of the forthcoming studio album by Yes featuring new vocalist Benoit David, and pose the question: is it really Yes if Jon Anderson isn't involved? And considering the overwhelming positive feedback we received from the live listeners about Norwegian band Wobbler, who sound an awful lot like Yes in the early 70s, what's the difference between going ga-ga for a soundalike band and being enthusiastic about Yes enlisting a guy that was still in diapers when the first album came out? So many questions, so few answers. Listen in and let us know what you think.

"What is Post Rock?"

According to Wikipedia, the definition of post rock is "A subgenre of progressive rock characterized by the influence and use of instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms and guitar textures not traditionally found in rock. Post rock musicians typically produce instrumental music." This is a pretty broad definition that's led many to continue to ask the question: WTF is post rock, anyway? In this episode, we endeavor to answer that question. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
