The Mighty Mellotron!!!  What about Genesis - Watcher of the Skies?  That's a classic Tron intro!

You betcher!  Played that awhile back and I'm trying...but not always succeeding...to not repeat myself.  But now that I look, there is no Genesis on the Mellotron playlist, which is a crying shame (not to mention, probably a criminal act on the DLBN).

[grovelling] I'll do better next time, master, truly I will! [/grovelling]

Posted August 14th 2006
Show Replay is 12 noon PDT, August 21st

It's almost the end of Summer Vacation!  While I was free to have my brain on the shelf for a bit, letting it recharge, it is now time to bring attention to bear on the beginning of the Advent term.  Since I'm fresh out of time and new ideas, I'll just play a bunch of stuff that's new to me this summer (note:  that's new to me.  Only one band here is truly new).

Your assignment: what's new to you this summer?

Show #18 - FM Nostalgia (Album Side Weekend)

Posted August 21st 2006
Show Replay is 12 noon PDT, August 28th

In the days of vinyl and decent radio, some stations would program an entire weekend of playing whole album sides by each artist. Here we do the same, but with a twist: the "album side" must be just one piece of music!

Retune the Sky Intro (1:16)
Genesis - Horizons (1:41)

Yes - The Gates of Delerium (21:54)

Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sidewise (Phase One) (18:37)

Pink Floyd - Echoes (23:29)

Aether - Chapter XI (Odyssey: The Greatest Tale)  (21:32) *

K2 - Chapter 1: Infinite Voyage (23:24)

Glass Hammer - At the Court of Alkinoos (21:33) *

Do you have a favorite massive slab of progressive music, at least 18 minutes long? Let me know!

-The Professor

*Each of  these counts as ~~ South Side of the Sky ~~ especially Aether, which is from South America!

Show #19 - The Birthday Show

Posted August 28th 2006
Show Replay is 12 noon PDT, September 4th

As I put together this week's show, I've turned another year older (yeah, don't ask).  So I'm just playing music that I either obtained as a gift, sounds like party music to me, or I'm just in the mood for.  And my mood swings like a pendelum.  So good luck following this one!

Retune the Sky Intro (1:16)
Yes - South Side of the Sky (7:56)

~~ South Side of the Sky ~~
Atticus Fault - Soundtrack (6:30)
Atticus Fault - My First Trip to Mars (4:12)

Smashmouth - Who's There? (3:33)

<<Party Time>>
Yes - I'm Running (7:37)
Talking Heads - Houses in Motion (4:54)
Adrian Belew - Six String (3:30)
Eric Johnson - Righteous (3:29)
Phil Keaggy - Montana (4:46)
Trey Anastasio - Inner Tube (11:22)

>>Party's Over>>
Rush - Between Sun and Moon (4:37)
B.L.U.E. - Picnic on Vesuvius (9:29)
King Crimson - Deception of the Thrush (7:11)
After Crying - Technopolis (7:54)

<< from Odyssey: The Greatest Tale <<
Minimum Vital - Etranger En Sa Demeure  (22:22)

Do you have a favorite progressive party tune, stress-reliever, or even stress-inducer? Drop me an e-mail! stephen@thedividingline.com

Show #20 - The Decline and Fall?  1976-1981

Posted September 4th 2006
Show Replay is 12 noon PDT, September 11th

Have you ever been tempted to pick up ELP's "Love Beach" from the cut-out bin, but just couldn't bring yourself to do it?  Are you even old enough to know what a cut-out bin is?  Do you think "Drama" even qualifies as a Yes album?  Did you freak out when you couldn't recognize Robert Fripp - or any of the music - when you went to see a reformed King Crimson play in 1981?  Did the musical direction Peter Gabriel took after leaving Genesis convince you they were better off without him?  Or maybe it was over for you when Steve Hackett left.  It doesn't matter if you answered "yes" to some, all, or none of these questions, tune in anyway!

Retune the Sky Intro (1:16)
Genesis - Behind the Lines (5:31)

Gentle Giant - I Am A Camera (3:31)
Yes - Run Through The Light (4:42)
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery (3:09)
Rush - Xanadu (11:11)

U.K. - Time to Kill (4:53)
Bruford - One of a Kind (6:45)
King Crimson - Heroes (live) (6:08)

Peter Gabriel - I Don't Remember (3:48)
Robert Fripp - New York, New York, New York (2:17)
League of Gentlemen - Inductive Resonance (3:18)

King Crimson - The Sheltering Sky (8:22)
Kansas - Magnum Opus (8:29)
Yes - On the Silent Wings of Freedom (7:45)

~~ South Side of the Sky -- WAY South ~~
Nexus - El Regreso (The Return) (27:50)
Bonus: Nexus - La Espiral (live at Radio Futuro - Chile)

Oh, the pain!

Okay, so it wasn't that bad, but after lens-replacement surgery last Friday I was pretty much good for nothing (some say I'm always good for nothing) and decided against pre-recording an all-new show.  So please enjoy this not-too-terribly-recent ghost from Retune The Sky's limited past:

Apparently today's (10/9/2006) show replay was pre-empted.  So, I'm going to let it go again for next week.  As always, the archive can be streamed or downloaded at your leisure, should you not be willing to wait.

SHOW #26 - Spotlight on Peter Gabriel

Posted November 10th, 2006
Show Replay is 12 noon PDT, November 13th AND November 20th

I heard the tune "Darkness" from 2003's Growing Up Live and loved it.  Good enough excuse to do a Gabriel career retrospective and spend some time enjoying some fine tunes from that release.  And okay, so the "then there were three..." Genesis is reforming and Gabriel has way too much going on to join up.  All the better for the listeners, I say, more music for everyone!

Your assignment this week is to share with me your favorite Gabriel, whether solo, Genesis, or collaboration.

Peter Gabriel - Darkness (live) (6:38)

    Genesis - Time Table (4:47)
Genesis - Firth of Fifth (9:38)
Genesis - The Musical Box (10:29)

Kevin Gilbert - Back in NYC (6:38)
Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (4:20)
Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers (3:57)
Peter Gabriel with Robert Fripp - Here Comes the Flood (live) (4:07)

Project Lo - Mercy Street (6:27)
Peter Gabriel - Red Rain (live) (6:20)
Peter Gabriel - Digging in the Dirt (live) (6:13)
Peter Gabriel - Quiet Steam (6:25)

    ~~ Has a Thing For Animals Doesn't He? ~~
Peter Gabriel with Laurie Anderson - Excellent Birds (3:16)
Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey (3:57)
Tony Levin - Dog One (5:15)

Peter Gabriel - Signal To Noise (live) (7:59)
Genesis - The Cinema Show (11:03)
