Retune the Sky Show #55 - The Crimson King Live

   Posted Tuesday April 22nd, 2008
Show replay Monday April 28th at 12 noon PDT

This week we max out on live Crimson in anticipation of a short tour of major US cities by the latest lineup.  As the boys engaged in rehearsals near Nashville the past week or so, Davo's recent message reminded me that I'd been lax in reading Robert Fripp's online journal and therefore completely missed the announcement that Gavin Harrison had joined the lineup!  Thanks for the heads-up, Davo.  Unfortunately for me and others in the Southeastern US, their habit of a play-in date in Nashville doesn't appear to be in the cards this time out.  Oh well, crank this stuff up then!

Retune the Sky Show #56 - The Ultimate Retuning, Part I

    Posted Tuesday May 6th, 2008
Show replay Monday May 12th (and May 19th) at 12 noon PDT

This show (and the next one) will be subdivided into some categories that I've wanted to explore lately. I consciously picked music that I've enjoyed over the years - or days - whether progressive rock or not. The thread that seems to tie most of the works presented here together is a sense of experimentalism, which is strong in the ProjeKct One piece for example, but also there even in the cover tunes. Plus, all the way through the show there is a real sense of yearning, either there in the music or evoked by the music. I'm really pushing the 15% boundary this time! Progressive country, anyone?

Retune the Sky Intro (1:16)
Jordan Rudess - Just the Same (8:22)

~~ Just Plain Yearnin' ~~
Genesis - Unquiet Slumber for the Sleepers (2:23)
Genesis - ...In That Quiet Earth (4:49)
Genesis - Afterglow (4:13)

~~ South Side of the Sky ~~
Emmylou Harris - Deeper Well (7:16)
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Vix 9 (4:27)
Edgar Meyer - Catch and Release (6:54)

Arvo Pärt - Fratres (Gil Shaham, violin) (9:54)

What do you need?

Perhaps people find something they need in this piece of music…somehow I hit the right note, something they were missing.  Something somewhere had been lost to them.  I feel that I instinctively knew what they needed.  - Henryk Górecki

He's completely out of step with the zeitgeist and yet he's enormously popular, which is so inspiring. His music fulfills a deep human need that has nothing to do with fashion.  - Steve Reich, speaking of Arvo Pärt
