Soundscape #162- Banjo Prog

After a brief hiatus, Soundscape returns with a setlist that we believe will have you jumping for joy. To begin with new music abounds throughout the opening and closing sets. Plus our theme- Banjo in Prog is one of our favorite themes in a while. We certainly did not exhaust the possibilities of what could be offered, but we found a lot of great songs for this section of the show.

Background this week comes from Jim Weiders previous album, Percolater. Look for new Jim Weider in the future. You can find him here-http://www.jimweider.com/page.asp?pageid=1

Due to some issues with tech here at DLBN not every show will download with the link. Here is the direct access link for your downloading, or you can drop Soundscape into your aggregator and maintain a subscription.

Next week we will be going back to April 1972.

Soundscape #162 B April 1972

Hello music fans! Here is another humdinger of a show for yas. We have new music from Dennis DeYoung, The Vital Might, Jack Yello, Eli, Farther Paint, and Diablo Swing Orchestra. Our theme this week was April 1972 as we continue our prog rock history lessons we pay attention to Caravan's 4th outing Waterloo Lily, and Robert Wyatt's post soft machine project Matching Mole. This is all tied up with other music of note from early 1972 and our usual mix of gems found during our week of musical spelunking.

We have 2 upcoming themes that we would like your input into. The first one will be this next weekend when we put together the prog wardrobe. We need songs about pants, jackets, hats and other remnants of apparel that a progressive gentleman or lady would wear. The 2 weeks away, we will be developing a literature theme based upon the life of King Arthur. No worries we will include some of Wakeman's classic, but put on your thinking caps and let us know what other songs might fit this theme. Send yoursuggestions to us by writing woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #163 Fashion for the Progophile

This evening on the prog runway we have Roger Waters wearing a smashing turquoise gown from Lord & Taylor, and whats this he is making quite a fashion statement with his running shoes that grip the tarmac. And look, it is the one and only Derrik Dick otherwise know as Fish, today he has a Tux On very creme brulee if you know what I mean. Yes in this weeks progcast you will see many amazing fashion wonders and blunders. Plus highlighting the show is new music from Syzygy and Live RPWL. There is a ton of great music encased herein, do please indulge your ears to yet another tittilating episode of Soundscape!

Next week our theme will be King Arthur. Please turn your round table requests into Merlin- woody@thedividingline.com We believe we can turn you on to a bit of Arthurian prog. Rick Wakeman is already in, but we are looking for more obscure references to the once and future king.

Soundscape #164 The Once and Future Prog

Many years ago there lived a legendary king known as Arthur. This king was handsome, fair, wise, and awfully shiny to a handful of future prog musicians. In this episode we will take a look at some of the many pieces of music influenced by Art and his cohorts.

We also have a lot of new stuff for your hungry progified stomachs to digest. New music from Jim Weider, Enochian Theory, Landmarq, DeeExpus, and a strange cover from Little Atlas.

Next week- the tragic and disasterous. Thats right we are looking for music that speaks to cataclysmic events, and destructive forces. Having recently viewed scenes from the newest cinematic wrecking ball, 2012, it is time for us to rejoice at the earth shaking, tidal waving, and armageddon fixating music of the soundscape. As always, send your requests to: woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #165 Tragiprogressivedisastapocolyptic

When you talk about destrution, don't you know that you can count me out/in- the words of one version of the Beatles revolution ring true in this episode in which we celebrate some prog rock interpretations of disaster. Tears for Fears said "Break it down again" and that is just what is happening here. Also on this weeks show you can check out new tunes from Diagonal, Slivovitz, The Reasoning and many more.

Next week, we will be looking at the many facets of the man called Fripp. What are your favorite Fripp tracks? What do you believe to be the most representative sounds from his Bobness? Send your suggestions to woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #167 May 1972

This weeks show contains gratuitous use of music from May of 1972. Of course we focus on the proggier aspects of that month but this show will deliver a little bit of the rock map that was made available in that month. It was not a busy month for progressive rock as many of the bands were working in the summer releases- which we we will hear in forthcoming episodes. We also played new music from Combination Head, Crippled Black Phoenix, and Moraine this week.

Next week Suzi and I will be geeking out at Dragoncon so we will not be on air. However, the following week we pose the question, how did the Beatles affect prog rock. We will be looking at the proggiest of Beatle songs, covers of their music by prog artisans and also those bands that incorporated Beatle artifacts into their sound. We believe that there are many bands who have done this, but as always, we want your input. What do you believe are the proggiest uses of Beatle sounds? Send your answers to woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #168 Beatleprog

After some incredible discussion through the Dividingline mailing list and over at Prog Archives, we got togeher a group of the most beatle inspired prog that we could find. Regardless of whether or not you call the fab four prog, proto prog, experimental pop, or psychedelic you will see that they had a huge influence on the progressive world. Even our short flash in the pan set cannot do justice to pointing out the effect of the Beatles on progressive rock, but it was a great deal of fun to put together and to listen to. We also have tucked inside of this episode new music from Phish, Paris Keeling, and Shadowland as well as a tribute to our Dragon experience featuring the one and only C.S. Brown as well as George Hrab.

Next week we will spin the tale of progfolk.Prog is so huge it has a great many subsets and we here at Soundscape are trying to understand the boundariesof each division and we will carry you along on our journey with us. Also next week, new live music from Tinyfish, Believe, and Jupiter Society.

Soundscape #169

Hello fellow travelers of the sonic realm. This week we have a long requested treat for you all. The theme is prog folk. We will turn you on to what many consider to be some of the best and most defining artists of the folky prog genre. We ourselves are just begining to learn what we like and don't like about this genre of prog. We now know it has a lot to do with hobbit rock, men in scary cable knit sweaters, whispy sounding and ethereal females who glide across flute strewn sound, and the occasional freak out when violence and folk collide. But there is so much more to this genre and I think you will all agree that we have only just begun to punch the surface. Perhaps another special is in order in the near future.

Also for those who are more interested in venturing into the territory of the new we have Believe, Tinyfish, and Porcupine Tree all offering new sounds for budding eardrums. Coat this with a cacaphony of chaotic hullabaloo and you will have a somewhat delicious and good for your brain episode of Soundscape.

Next week, we zap back in time again halting our little engine in June and July of 1972. We will also finally here new tunes from Jupiter Society, Muse, Ajalon and hopefully many others. Thanks so much for listening to us, we have a great time every week and it is due to the fact that we know many of you download us week after week.

Soundscape #170 June and July 1972

Another journey into the past as we continue our slow crawl through prog history. This time around we investigate albums that emerged on the scene in June and July of 1972. Featured albums from Aphrodite's Child, Pink Floyd, David Bowie and Gentle Giant. We also heard new music from Jupiter Society, Ajalon, and Muse.

Next week we will be playing a long set which features tons of new music. The Soundscape inbox has flooded with new releases and we want to give you a healthy helping of all that we can. However, the week after this we will be featuring Prawg (Southern Prog) from right here in the south east. While we will mostly focus on the loacal Atlanta Ga. prog scene we will also dip from the surrounding souther states. If you have a southern prog request or know of a southern prog outfit drop us a line at woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #171 Taking You Somewhere New

The Soundscape inbox was full. There was nothing to do for it but just play new music all night for you and so we did.

Next week: Prawg! As we focus our attention on Southeast USA we bring you a dose of southern prog featuring local Atlanta Ga. artists as well as some bands from SC, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and possibly Virginia. I am not sure if there is a prog equivalent to a monster truck, but we will tune into southern culture prog style. Mint Juleps and Sweet Tea and Prawg Yeehaw! Soundscape #172 Prawg

Laydown a backbeat and crank up your trusted Gibson, get in your monster Prawg trucks, or just sit a while on the cabin porch. This week we offer you a healthy selection of southern based progressive rock (mostly from right here in our home town Atlanta Ga.). Although there is a Freebird in the mix, this ain't your average southern music. We may be in the south but we can still mix up methodical prog madness and this show will surely give evidence to that.

Suzi and I will be on the road for the next 2 Sundays, but when we return we will either offer a halloween theme, or we will return to Summer of 1972. If you have a preference one way or the other, drop us a line at woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #173 Turn On the Dark

Hello folks, and Happy Halloween! For the 4th year running we have a rather spooky show put together for your listening pleasure. We had quite a few glitches with the live show and some of those have been edited out so that the ride will be a little smoother. Check out new music from The Enid, Gov't Mule, and Kayak. Show your love for Comus!

Next week, we take another historical roundabout ride through mid 1972 prog classics. This time around we will be playing music from July-September. Also in 2 weeks we will be looking at how Star Wars has impacted progressive rock so if you know of any progressive songs that you feel reference Star Wars, then please drop us a line at woody@thedividingline.com

Soundscape #175 Star Wars- The Prog Strikes Back

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, an amazing cinematic feature unfolded before our young eyes. Star Wars has probably had more impact on our culture than many other science fiction franchises. The story has stretched into many offshoots from many areas of the media, but has it impacted our beloved progressive rock? The answer is a resounding yes! This week take a trip with us into progressive rock that pays homage to Star Wars,

Next week we will be playing more of a spontaneous mix of music, however if you have requests please drop us a line. woody@thedividingline.com
