A monster show if I do say so myself. This week we hear new music from Circle II Circle, Jordan Rudess, Frost*, and Riverside. We have our birth of prog theme which takes us on a journey from the psychedelia of 66 to the beginings of the prog movement in 67. Also included here is an interview with Rocket Scientist Erik Norlander as we talk about the album Revolution Road. A tribute to Jerry Garcia rounds things out (although the best of this tribute will come in the next few weeks).
The archive will be available in just an hour or so...get it while it is hot.
Next week: Elevator Prog. Yes it will be a quiet theme, but the question is, if prog were elevator music, what would you hear during your ride to the top? I am looking here for songs that mimic the muzak in elevators (but hopefully with some proggy pizzaz).

What I have on tap for you this week, is yet another fabulous trip back to the birthplace of progressive music. You will see the birth of the Canterbury movement, the early genetic materials of King Crimson, and the begining of Folk Prog. A ride of discovery beckons complete with the usual stunted speech of a DJ caught in his own headlights.
Next week, Science Fiction in Prog! Send me your favorite Sci Fi Prog songs and I will add them into the list. Also the theme of this weeks show ran long and kept me from adding in The Wuthering Heights section..don't worry it is coming. By the way, I would love to know if any of you guys are reading along with me.

Despite some fantastic glitches, including an iphones remix of Achilles (deep appologies there), this is a really fantastic show. Did I get to all of the best drummers...I doubt it. There are a good many greats left out in the cold, but this is a good tour of the power of our favorite prog drummers.
Next weeks theme: But Can You Dance to it? Is there Danceable Prog out there? We are going to try to find out next week.

Imagine the scene. An old dilapidated warehouse, a secret rendezvous for fans of progressive music, hidden away from the prog purists and the dance purists. The old warehouse fills with dancers, each one able to represent their dance moves regardless of tempo (although you have to be impressed with the 11/8 time sig dancers). The lights fade, The Volcano Erupts....Better Start to Dance...Do You Wanna Dance With Me? Strobe lights erupt and the floor vibrates with the excitement of those who are called to dance. Get your feet moving people, this is not a sedentary show. There are not even any slow dances, but I did play some of the Ptree and Madame Blavatsky Overdrive.
Next week drop on by for yet another chapter in the Birth of Prog series. This time around we will round out 1968 and get into the birth of giants in 1969. You can expect some very rare stuff to appear. If you have requests from 1969, drop me a line and let me know what you would like to hear.

If you do not know your historical prog, this will be the show for you. We set the wayback machine for 1968 and worked our way up to April of 69 highlighting the progress of the progressive, and the social chaos that was 1969. For myself this monthly journey has been an incredible learning experience. The beautiful thing about prog is that for the most part it does not sound dated. Sure the equipment is older, and perhaps some of the ideas arcane, but it always feels like cutting edge. Prog seems to take us to the edge of reality no matter what thew message. This weeks show is no exception, come on buy the ticket, take the ride. In the words of Soc from Reaper "We'll sell you the whole seat, but you will only need the edge".
Next week, I will go crazy! I am not planning anything, soundscape will unfold to all involved. It is possible that we will have friends from Telestrion in the studio, they may even bring a Theremin. So with a little help from my friends, and a bottle or 2, I expect a pretty wild time. I hope you will join us, but until then here is this weeks setlist.

This time around I have 4 hours of mirth and mayhem with the space groovers from the local scene "Telestrion" the remnants of Qualone. Brain and Andy from Telestrion were on hand to support the new album, talk about some of the music, offer a weird selection of lesser known prog gems, and play with the Theramin in studio. Methinks that some mixing might could have been done better, but a fun time was had by us all and hopefully that will communicate into a fun time for you listeners out there.
Next week we will be offering a Telestrion cd to some lucky fellow, and we will play some more of their finely tuned trip-tofu. Also, imagine a world in which the local karaoke bar plays progressive music...what are your favorite prog crooners? Which songs would you like to sing aloud to a crowd? Send me your favorites, because next week is Progaoke week. Finally, you can expect the remnant of TS Eliots Wasteland to be displayed in musical visage as we return yet again to another book of the month. This all happens next Tuesday night, and we will be expecting you to show up and spend another crazy evening with Soundscape!

Ok, well I knew the idea of doing karaoke prog was outlandish, but we played some great music throughout the evening. Walter's karaoke pick was for Hocus-Pocus...I wish we could have heard him do the little gnome part. This show was not exactly defined by new progressive music, but some highlights includes Rodrigos Y Gabriela (an alternative flamenco duo who will blow your mind in Ixtapa and the cover piece Orion from Metallica). Also of note was new Eddie Vedder from the soundtrack to "Into the Wild" as well as new music from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (a strange duo to say the least but this album has it's moments). Other new and of note pieces include Singularity, Gov't Mule, Michael Lee Firkins, and yes...more Telestrion. Oh and also we looked into T.S. Eliot's "Waste Land" as our book club selection. So have at it, go for it and enjoy.
Next week is the second annual Progoween here on Soundscape. My yearly hobby of creating halloween cd's has blossomed into the 4 hour soundscape extravaganza. What I need from you listeners is your suggestion for scary halloween music. Everyone have a great week and I will see you next time.

Well here it is folks, this years Halloween extravaganza. Look for lots of appearances by Steve Hackett (probably the biggest contributor to halloweeny prog I have found). Also you will find that I have tucked away a nice big Porcupine tree set. Suzi and I just went to see Ptree this week and had a fabulous time, so we wanted to share the love. We hope you all enjoy the show, and even though it is no longer halloween, let me know if you run across anymore spooky goodies (I am always on the lookout for such things). We begin right where we left off last month in April of 1969. Along the way we encounter some fantastic music from the prog world, VDGG, Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd etc. We hit the motherlode when in the fall of 1969 King Crimson is born. Music will never be the same. It was a fun show filled with the signposts of a year of cutting edge experimental music during the Summer of 69.
Next week, its back to some new tricks as I clean out the whats new box. Plus we will have another moment in the spiny forest as we hit Porcupine Tree up for another round of pure appreciation.

If a DJ screams and no one is in chat is he still a DJ? Perhaps he is Scrodingers DJ and no one knows if there is a DJ, they just sort of speculate. Well as the DJ who far too often wears his heart on his sleeve, I suggest you run away from this one. In an attempt to clean the demons out of my head I sought out music as metaphor for my life as it is now. I sought out archetypal schemes that would be universally understood and reflective of the great raging heart that holds our humanity pinned against the corkboard of consciousness. I looked for ambiguities that would underline the maze that we go through day in and day out under the repressive regimes of power that both govern and squeeze the life out of the world around us. I sodding well played music of a self indulgent nature and attempted to meld all of this into a labrythine structure of song. Well as an idea, that all sounds fine and dandy, but it skips a few beats and turns out to be a somewhat flawed masterpiece. Nevertheless should you venture into the archival abyss, you will find a handy packet of rage and helplessness, that perhaps triumphantly rises above all of the pettiness of the world as it reaches it's dramatic conclusion. I am sure Davinci had many rough drafts and this to be sure is one of them for yours truly. The archive will be up in the next hour or so.
However, if you want to skip right on to a more happy care bear sort of theme, drop in next week when soundscape finds itself on the playground. We will also take a trip into wonderland as we pay homage to the works of Lewis Carroll. Your suggestions are always appreciated, just throw me down a line.

This time around our theme takes us to the many playground games and toys that have inspired our progfathers to sing. We also take a moment to celebrate the songs that were inspired by Lewis Carroll's writings, and we dip into some new recordings from Little Atlas, Morglbl, Queensryche, and The Flower Kings.
Next week we return to the good olde days of 1969 as we continue the History of Prog series. We will start in late 1969 and see where the journey takes us.
Our new book club choice for December will be none other than the time honored classic "The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The archive will be in the server, in the next hour or so.
As always if you have suggestions for any of the aforementioned themes or if you have a theme idea for a future show, please drop me a line.
