Well, guess what? Under the Radar turned one year old on tonight’s show! I started the show on November 30, 2005. And I didn’t even think to make a big deal out of it tonight! Maybe it’s because I don’t like to toot my own horn too much. Or maybe it’s because I don’t have a horn – though even at my advanced age I still do get horny now and then – that’s an annual thing too, LOL! But I digress… It doesn’t seem like a year since I started UTR, but the numbers don’t lie!
At any rate, I don’t know what I would have done differently if I had realized what the occasion was – it was a great show even without the party hats and cake! I played some personal favorites from UK, Kino, RPWL, and others, along with some cool stuff by artists I’ve never played on the show before, like Clannad and Izz. All great stuff, as I’m sure you’ll agree! Check it out and let me know what you think!
Here's this week's setlist, gang! Next week, be sure to tune in for a Special Edition of Under the Radar, featuring music from the Canterbury Scene! This will include all well-known Canterbury and related artists I can get my hands on. It turns out that there's a lot of variety in the music of this sub-genre of progressive rock, and most of it gets ignored by "mainstream" progressive rock fans, so it's right up our alley here at Under the Radar! Some of the bands included in the broad definition of "Canterbury" are Soft Machine, Gong, National Health, Hatfield and the North, Caravan, Henry Cow, Camel, Bruford, Matching Mole...the list goes on and on! Anyway, if you have a favorite band or track that is in any way related to the Canterbury scene, be sure to email me before next Wednesday and I'll do my best to fit it into the show! It should be a lot of fun, so join me next week!
Great fun, great tunes, a truly unique listening experience on last night's Special Canterbury Edition of Under the Radar! In fact, it went so well that I'm tempted to do this again - perhaps even on some kind of regular basis. We'll see... In the process of putting together this Canterbury set, I heard so much great music that was new - at least new to me - and there's a lot more that I didn't even get a chance to listen to, and a lot more that I haven't even gotten my hands on yet. Let's just say I'm a little bit "jazzed" about this stuff! Yes, some of this music is a little bit jazzy, but jazziness isn't all there is to it. There are lots of great songs, and a quirky sense of humor, as I think you'll agree as you listen to last night's set. It's a "must hear" collection, so enjoy and let me know what you think!

A little longer than usual tonight - started early and expected to go really late, due to Steve Cozart's late return from NYC. But lo and behold, Steve showed up on time! It seems Steve needs a refresher on "days of the week," since he actually returned from NYC on Tuesday, while thinking it was Wednesday... how he made it to the airport on the right day, we may never know, LOL! At any rate, it was another great evening for UTR, as the playlist below will attest! Enjoy the archive!
