The Lighter Side Report Card
« on: November 11, 2003, 06:57:17 am »

Well, after a little over a year as a DJ here at the Dividing Line, I feel it's time for a job evaluation.  At most real jobs, you periodically get evaluated to let you know how you're doing.  I would like the help of listeners and fellow DJ's to let me know how I'm doing.  Oh sure, I could just guess by looking at the number of listeners each week and the attitudes and comments of those in chat.  But if listener numbers are the barometer, then I certainly have work to do.

I'd appreciate as many comments as possible so that I know what I'm doing right and also so I know what I have to improve on.  Please be honest, but simple comments like 'You suck' or 'Love your show, don't change a thing' don't really help me.  You can post them here or e-mail me privately at gary@thedividingline.com.  I hope to hear some sincere critiques from as many people as possible.  Thanks.

Congrats on a year, Gary!

The things I like about your show are that you always try real hard to play any requests you get. I've seen you go running off to your basement or wherever to locate an elusive track. I also like how you mix in some humorous stuff for levity, though some of the Bob and Tom type stuff grates pretty quickly.

One thing you could do to improve is to be more interactive in the chat. The shows on this station I enjoy most are the ones where the dj will be constantly engaged in conversation. To me internet radio is more of an active listen - I have hundreds of cds to listen to, so if all I want is music I can spin my own.

I think your show is just fine Gary. Listener numbers are a more than partial result of promotion, and if your listener numbers aren't where you want them to be, then it's probably not the show but the lack of promotion on other message boards and e-mail.

Just my 2 cents.

Frans

Definitely one of my favorite shows. I'm a "lighter side" kinda guy, so the music you play is generally right up my alley. Even if I'm not in chat, which hasn't been very often lately, I usually make it a point to have the music running in the background while I'm watching Law and Order  Grin

Hey there whitey!!! Wink. Well, I guess I don't have to tell you how much I enjoy your shows as I tell you every week in chat. I agree the best thing about it is your timing... whenever there's a thread running around the many mailing lists we are all part of; you find the way to play some of the stuff that's being discussed. Also, as Kravz said, you just go and immediately play the song(s) any of us chatters has requested, which means so much. I remember one night that I had to go because it was pretty late and you kept playing songs I loved and you said: “what else can we play so J won’t leave?”... he he he, it doesn’t get any cooler than that man! Smiley. I for one, get you talking on chat a lot, but I see ‘the more interactive’ part as a good point. Weekday nights are a bit complicated so I see why the numbers are not where you want them to be, although I think we have formed a nice niche on wednesday nights but of course the more the better. All in all , I wouldn’t change a thing but that’s just me. Anyhoo, congratulations on a great show Gary Bauer, errr Saver, errr Sour, eerr … what’s that again? Sauer, right! Grin
Peace
Jairo.

Gary, congratulations on passing a year...but I thought you actually did that a while ago.  In any event, if there's one thing that comes through on your show loud and clear, it's that you enjoy doing it, and that is magnetic.  You play a wide variety of music, and as already stated, if there's a request you get it on real fast.  I still remember when I jokingly requested something I can't stand and didn't think there was a chance in hell you actually had it, but not only did you have it - you played it the very next song, with the warning: don't ever dare me to play something!

I agree with Frans that if you're not getting the number of listeners you'd like, it's not the show, it's a lack of promotion.  I'm guilty of that myself.  I don't really like posting to message boards or mail lists unless I've got a special show.

I wish I could tune in more often than I do.  It's not that I don't want to - I just have a lot of other things on the go.  It's hard to sit at the computer every single night and do nothing but chat and listen.  Anyway, I think you're doing a great job and I'm glad you're on the team. Keep up the good work.
