Title: What was your last CD purchase?
Post by: The_Lurker on January 15, 2004, 12:22:53 pm
I'm always looking for new musical ideas, so I thought I'd ask DJ's and listeners alike, what was the last CD you bought?

For me, it was Testimony by Neal Morse and I was admittedly late in picking it up. Other than that it was the Rhino expanded & remastered version of Relayer by Yes.

'The Epic Quality of Life'  by Shaun Guerin ; Shaun was the lead singer and second drummer for the Genesis tribute band 'Cinema Show' until his sudden death last July at 41.
Shaun voice sounded alot like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins also at times. Being a old Genesis fan, I really enjoyed this new release alot. Read more about Shaun and his cd at  www.shaunguerin.com

I just stopped by a shop yesterday and ordered Switchfoot - The Beautiful Letdown. I heard a few tracks of it a couple weeks ago at church of all places - very interesting songwriting, and appears to be decent musicmanship. I should have it later today.

Next I'm gonna go to wonky.net and order the latest from that Yogi character... and I still have a sawbuck stashed away for the new Powder disc.

Sorry again for the delay in responding...just getting back to normal after migrating to a new PC.  Much installing and configuring!

OK, I have only listened to Little Atlas twice and I think they're ok.  The song I like the most is the one that appeared on the Prog4you compilation CD.  They are definitely talentd and I'm glad you enjoy it.  I need to spend more time before saying much more.  I know gary picked it up and really likes it.  Maybe he can add a comment here?

Actually Rene, yes, there are some very Bostonesque moments on the cd.  I am pleasantly surprised at how much I am enjoying it actually.

As far as yet more new discs...just received a couple from Fish "Field of Crows" and "Mixed Company - Live in Holland 2002".

Treated my self yesterday, since it was my birthday, to a trip to Rolling Stone Music (used to be Records, Music sounds weird):

For $7.99 -

Re-releases of Relayer, Going For The One, Tormato, and Drama by Yes;
Head, The Birds The Bees And The Monkees, and Pisces Aquarius Capricorn & Jones by The Monkees;
Infinity by Journey

and for $5.99, that ol' 8 Track essential...

Hair Of The Dog by Nazareth

Topped the evening off with deep dish pizza at Geno's East, doesn't get any better!

Marbles, as far as Marbles goes, I wouldn't call myself a Marillion fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I do enjoy their music and thought Anoraknophobia was fantastic.  But so far I’m not all that impressed with Marbles either!  It has some OK tracks, but as an album it seems very slow paced without much to offer.  They do slow tracks well, but after awhile the whole album starts to sound the same.  I think it needs to be more diverse in order to keep the interest through the whole album.  I think I’ll be enjoying the album for single tracks rather than a whole.  Genie in particular is a beautiful song.  It’s a shame this album turned out the way it did as I was really looking forward to it.  I hope it does well for the band, you gotta commend their efforts to keep this type of music going especially when they have no label and are doing it all themselves.  I have a huge amount of respect for the passion and dedication of these musicians.  I’ll just have to enjoy their previous albums I suppose.

Purchased:  The Tubes - What Do You Want From Live
yes, I finally replaced my 1978 vinyl copy

Most recent CD: Lac Placide - Away
sent to the station by the band, from Paris France.  There is some really good musicianship and cool progressive passages, but I can't get past the vocals.  They have a female vocalist who sounds like she'd be more suited to opera.  She sings in English, while a male vocalist sings in French.  It sounds like she sings a line in English, then he sings a line in French.  I'd need a translator to determine if they are the same lines.  I don't know if I'll play this on my show or not.  But there is one very interesting 18-minute track that has a little classical acoustic guitar, but it's mostly the sound of running water, like a creek, with percussion and effects...really moody stuff.  It's not really a "song"  but I am tempted to play it just so you can hear it.  Interesting.

Lurk,

I really like this band, still taking it all in, but great first impressions (unlike another 2 CD set recently acquired :P) , especially the songs that Heather sings (why Bryan sings when she has such a great voice... I don't know) . This is their Best Of  collection, some really tasty stuff.

Oh, I didn't realize it was a "best of." For some reason I was thinking it was a live album. Just shows you how much more there is for me to learn about Mostly Autumn. And I intend to!

What a co-ink-a-dink, I picked up the first Starcastle as well today, as well as a live Starcastle from 78, and a couple more Floyd covers, all from my local CD shop, Moondog knows where :-)

As far as Starcastle goes, I got a mention on their website, as well as a thank you message from Gary, and from Eric their Webmaster. Let's hope Gary gets well enough to attend Rosfest next year, so he can receive that guitar.

My pre-order of Inside Pink Floyd: A Critical Review 1967 - 1996, a 2 DVD and book set arrived from the UK like a week after I ordered it, and a good week and a half prior to the official release date. There may be a Floyd history special on IO right around the corner.

Also recently got the Subscribers Edition of Passengers, the latest from Mostly Autumn, which includes a live CD, Mostly Autumn Live at the Canterbury Fayre. Excellent, both of them!

Also, replaced 6 Floyd discs with their remastered versions.
Ozric Tentacles: Erpland
Metamorphosis: After All These Years and Nobody Cares
Man On Fire: their Debut from 98
Ayreon: The Human Equation
3 versions of Marillion: You're Gone (I know, I've still got a little Maril-lemming in me)

No, not my first.  I have Encounters and Artificial Paradise too.
Of the three I still like AP the best, every song on it to me is great. On X-rayed, I've listened to it maybe a half dozen times thru and still like the last two tunes the best (Given-Used-Forgotten & This World Is Not For Me)       8)

I got _Marbles On The Road_ yesterday (DVD). One of the best DVDs I've seen when it comes to cutting. A guy has a solo: the camera is there. Sweet!
During the first minutes, there's an ugly blue stage light which makes everything very blurry. But that improves later. Great DVD!

Miles Davis Quintet - 1965-1968 (6 CD Box)
Miles Davis - The Columbia Years 1955-1985  (4 CD Box)

The Quintet Box is amazing, containing everything Miles recorded (for Columbia/Legacy) with the Quintet of Carter, Shorter, Hancock, and Williams between the years '55 and '58.

The Columbia Years collection is more of a collectors item than it is an accurate assembly of work (after all its only 4 cds) but it's cool because it divides the music into five sections - Blues, Standards, Originals, Moods, and Electric

Both come with multi paged color books containing essays and line-up bios.

hey Jurgen!

The credit should be given to the director in that situation. I'm sure most editors would love to cut to the guitar player at the proper moment, but if the director didn't have a camera on the player (or if the cameraman didn't follow direction), the editor doesn't have the shot to go to.

Does that make sense?  ???

My next purchase after Ok Computer would be their latest "Hail To The Theif".  Not only do I think it's their best album to date, but "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" are really damn weird and personally not much to my liking (although both albums do have their strong points)  Another album which many fans consider their best is "The Bends" which is a little too alt. rock for my taste, but it's still a good effort in my books.  Download the song Ideoteque from Kid A if you want a sample of what that album sounds like, great song.

Live in America
isn't that bad of a recording for only the band's sixth live gig ever.  The joy in finding it is mostly derived from the fact that I have never even seen it in a store before, so finding it for a used price was a major bonus; I've wanted to get it mostly to hear the Genesis and Beatles covers.  So, all in all, well worth $10 for the double-CD, to complete my Trans collection.

w/r/t Live In Europe:  I've had that DVD for a year or so now and it is almost solely responsible (it and The Flower Kings DVD) for me going off on major buying tangents with TFK, SB and most especially, POS (picked up their entire catalog in less than two months).  I watch a portion of the Trans DVD almost weekly, along with my DT, SB, TFK and Marillion DVDs.  The POS Be DVD coming out later this month will make a nice completion to the Transatlantic family tree.

You point is valid though:  they are a much more polished live band on their second tour, and the DVD is a great representation of that.

Just bought:

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute   (AMAZING. I can't say enough good things about this)

Miles Davis Quintet feat. Barney Wilen - Amsterdam Concert 1957

Miles Davis - Lift to the Scaffold (Complete Soundtrack)

Frances The Mute could very well be the best album of 2005.  I havn't heard ANYTHING this unique for years.  Whereas the original Mars Volta album really disappointed me...this is completly different.  With only 5 songs making up 72 minutes and crossing every genre I can think of from ambiant to latin. I mean it's got both a full strings section and full brass section and the 30 minute song on here is beautiful.  From melodic piano runs to crunchy polyrhymatic rock sections, it's really quite the experiance.  I'll stop preaching now, but everyone should give this a listen.

Platypus ~ Ice Cycles
The Mars Volta ~ Frances The Mute ... OK, Adam, I'm about 6 or so minutes in to the first listen...pretty damn impressive so far.  This is the first CD in a long time that I have purchased "blind", (or "deaf" as it were), without ever having to my knowledge heard a single note by the band.  Certainly a worthy risk in this case.

Back to listening....

You should check out, if you haven't heard them already, Brubeck's "Brubeck Time", "Time Out", and "Time Further Out".  Not only classic albums but imo the best of Brubeck.  Little known fact that Brubeck influenced many great prog keys players: Emerson, Wakeman, ect...  Polytonality was pretty rare at the time - playing in different keys with the right and left hands.  Pretty sweet stuff.  Not to mention the odd time sigs and polyrhythms that Brubeck was best known for.  I get excited when I see people listening to Brubeck, he's not exactly 'popular' anymore. :)

I have been looking for the Bruford CD since the first time I heard you play the title track on OS ... today was finally my lucky day.  I am overdue in getting reacquainted with A. Holdsworth, so this CD will be a good start.  I am obviously very pleased to add these Miles titles to my collection, even though it is Bitches Brew that I have been searching for lately.  I am slowly establishing a Miles catalog worthy of muster!  8)

I have B's Brew on vinyl but not disc.  But it has been so long since I played the LP, it's like not having it at all.  I do have KOB on CD however.

P.S.  I also have Song X on vinyl but haven't heard it in years.  I hope you'll be busting it out on OS soon.

Well, it was Christmas early/late this year,as I picked up not 1,but many CDs on a trip to Minneapolis recently. Here we go. First is the remastered Dream Theater "When Dream and Day Unite". Next up is James LaBrie's Mullmuzzler 1 with Mike Keneally on guitar.Although I already have a cassette copy(compliments of Mike the Lurker) of Liquid Tension Experiment 1,I recieved the CD as a gift from a friend. I also recieved as a gift the Velvet Revolver CD and Deep Purple's 2003 release "Bananas" with Steve Morse on guitars. Filling out my aquisitions are Joe Jackson's"Look Sharp",Todd Rundgren's "liars", Steve Vai's "The Seventh Song" and his new one "Real Illusions:Reflections",and Jordan Rudess' 2004 release "Rhythm of Time" with Joe Sariani,Steve Morse, Vinnie Moore and Greg Howe on guitars,Rod Morgenstein on drums,Dave LaRue on bass and Kip Winger on vocals. Lots of listening!

I picked up "Freaks of Nature" by Kansas on ebay for a dollar.

Now I can replace the cassette I got at a gas station for $1.99.

Great tunes at a great price.
Michael...you gave me that $1.99 cassette! Jeff.

I almost (how could I?) forgot I picked up Cryptic Vision's "Moments of Clarity" from the band when they opened for Kansas in St Petersburg. I also mentioned the Dividing Line to them, and they thank any of the DJs that play their tunes.

Radiohead - OK Computer
Man, I am on a roll when it comes to finding CD titles at used or sale prices the first time I look for them!!  Nice suggestion, Grrrl, this IS a good place to start... My first impression was Violent Femmes meets Marillion, which would make for a strange meeting indeed!  Strange but beautiful!  If OK Computer is their Abbey Road, do they have a Sgt. Peppers and White Album as well?

John Scofield & Pat Metheny - I Can See Your House From Here
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way
Phish - A Picture of Nectar
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions of the Emerald Beyond
King Crimson - The ConstrucKtion of Light

Saw Pat Metheny a few weeks ago in Clearwater. They opened with a complete playing of their new album. I had the pleasure of greeting him in the morning after the show as he was walking down the hallway of the resort I work at. He was tired, but friendly!

I regrettably missed PMG this tour, sounds like it was another classic.  I saw them the tour before and a few other times dating back to 1987.  Always a top-notch concert experience.  How cool to meet him too! Awesome!

Hey, Steve, welcome.  As I mentioned to you in chat, when I first heard Be, I too thought it was very disjointed and cumbersome, despite the brilliance of the music.  But with repeated listens, the underlying musical themes and the amazing subtleties of the overall orchestration emerge and it becomes a more cohesive whole.  I still, after months of listening to it, continue to be rewarded by all there is to discover.  I can't friggin' wait to see the DVD to delve deeper into the strange and magnificent world that is Be.

Enjoy!

Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways ( remaster ).

Nice to see another Prog fan from Florida Mindcrime. Lurk knows another progger who lives in FL - that brings the total back to somewhere around 7 ( if you include the guys from Little Atlas ) and another friend of mine.

Keep the prog fires burning in FL - and come on up to Atlanta when you get the chance!

These purchases should ultimately be classified as Concert Psyche-ing Music, as I will be seeing both of these bands live the first week of June (TFK at CalProg, of course, and TMV back in Phoenix 3 days later).  I can hardly frippin' wait!!!!!!

Ayreon - The Human Equation (with bonus DVD)

Special thanks to Mr. Lucassen for let Hellion Records realease the album in my country.  I hope others bands like Spock's Beard and Porcupine Tree follow this example. :) (The flower kings and Pain of Salvation, for example, has national CDs too).

New CD purchased this week:
Steve Walsh - "Shadowman"

I have been a huge Steve Walsh and Kansas fan since the early 80's

However after going to the De Los Trios concert in Seattle this last weekend, I am going to be looking at getting some music by "The Porcupine Tree". I never heard of them until now, and I am curious about there music, as a ton of people seam to really like them.

Most recent purchases/arrivals:

Spock's Beard - Gluttons for Punishment
Neal Morse - Inner Circle #3
Sylvan - Encounters
Sylvan - Deliverance

Shawn Gordon of Prog Rock Records says the first two Sylvan CDs are going out of print, so you Sylvan fans better find copies of those now if you want them. I got mine from Greg Walker at Synphonic.

A Danish band called Mew have just released their new album called Mew and the Glass Handed Kites.  Until a couple of weeks ago I had never heard of this band but after reading a review of the album in 'Metro' I ordered it from Play on a whim.  I must recommend this album to all lovers of the 'new prog' style of music.  If I had to compare them with other bands I'd say somewhere in between Sigur Ros and Kino.  A great album IMO.

About a week ago I got:

Karmakanic - Entering the Spectra

Both Karmakanic CDs were on clearance for only $5.50 each at www.theendrecords.com. And there's no shipping charge if you're in the continental U.S. Highly recommended! Pick both Karmakanic CDs up before they're gone.

And sadly, there's a moratorium on spending until Christmas, although I'm gonna cheat on that and order the new IZZ CD.  ;)
