Polling Station / How many albums have you bought from listening?
« on: December 14, 2005, 09:58:28 pm »
We were just listening to Scozart's show tonight wondering how many real purchases people have made by hearing bands & artists that they heard first on The Dividing Line.  This poll is limited to the last year only.  People who vote might also want to post a little testimonial to impress the individual artists or labels in the near future!  ;D

The Dividing Line / Metaphor on Critic's Carnival 10/28
« on: October 18, 2005, 07:51:47 pm »
Happy Halloween prog-fans!

Friday October 28th we are proud to announce a visit to Carnival Studios from local Bay Area band Metaphor!  Unlike most other in-person visits from other artists, this time we will have all five members of the band on hand to discuss their 2 CD’s & upcoming 3rd album along with many other topics I’m sure!

For those of you unfamiliar with Metaphor, on the band’s website ( there is an interesting quote:

---The “Genesis” (sorry for the pun!) of Metaphor: In 1993, San Jose guitarist Malcolm Smith placed the following advertisement in BAM Magazine (San Francisco Bay Area):  “Hackett seeks Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, Collins.  Object: Suppers Ready.”---

12 years later the band is still going strong, so I hope you’ll join us the night of the 28th for 3 hours of music & conversation with Malcolm Smith, Marc Spooner, John Mabry, Jim Anderson & Greg Miller (also of Mind Furniture.)  It sounds like a party, so who knows who else might show up?

All for now,
Carnival Man

Critic’s Carnival every Friday night from 9pm-12 PT on

Artists & Music / Chet Helms RIP
« on: June 26, 2005, 09:56:25 am »
"Chet Helms, a towering figure in the 1960s Bay Area music scene who brought Janis Joplin to San Francisco and ran the Avalon Ballroom during the Summer of Love, died early Saturday after suffering a stroke last week. He was 62."

I was friends with Chet for several years, & he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet! We would invite each other to concerts over those years & you would be suprised how much current or new music he was into. Chet saw Fish at Slim's in SF with us during the '97 US tour, among other shows.  The funniest gig was going to a Dream Theater show when they came to SF...with one of the original "hippies" surrounded by prog-metal fans & enjoying himself as much as the headbanging, clad-in-black kids around him.

He died yesterday morning...

Off-Topic Talk / Google image your DJ/screen name
« on: June 23, 2005, 05:31:04 pm »
Here's a little game...take your DJ or listener nickname & put it in the Google Image search & then post the first picture (as long as the picture isn't offensive.)

Mine is just a little odd:

The Dividing Line / Critic's Carnival this week...
« on: June 08, 2004, 12:07:58 pm »
Yes, that’s right! CarnivalMan will be giving away one ticket to CalProgDay during the show this coming Friday night (the 11th.) Even though I cannot attend, I purchased a ticket to help support all the effort that has gone into CPD by Jim Harrel, the bands & the other organizers. This single ticket is for Standard Seating (a $55 value) so if you were thinking of going this would be a chance to reduce your expenses, or if you already have tickets & want to bring a friend then this is perfect for you too!

For your chance to win this ticket you only have to do two things: Listen to Critic’s Carnival this Friday night & make sure to be in the DLBN chat room for the 10 o’clock roll-call! It’s just that simple. During the first hour of Critic’s Carnival (from 9 to 10) I’ll play most or all of the CPD bands just to get everyone in the mood! So tune in this week for the coolest giveaway to date on Critic’s Carnival! -CarnivalMan

Off-Topic Talk / Ponds trashed by racoons last night :-(
« on: September 12, 2003, 06:16:01 am »
I got up this morning & every fish is gone & all the plants are trashed...well, my ponds lasted about 3+ months :-(

Not much I can do now since I have to get to work. I just cleaned out all the dead plants & the dead misquito fish that must have gotten crushed in the battle.

Oh well, I still have my pictures...
