After much persuasion (and poking with a pointy stick) I've got Dad shut up in the attic again this week. You may think it's cruel - it is his birthday, after all! - but I've got him plugged into a constant supply of Big Big Train and Tinyfish so he should be okay.

So make way Wilf, Spoffo is back! This time we've got a greater mixture of different styles, quite different from my first show back in June of last year.

Enjoy!

The European Perspective #65 - Here Comes The Sun
« Reply #68 on: April 03, 2010, 07:26:16 AM »
Listen to our download this episode

'Here Comes The Sun', as the Beatles would have it in their song from 1969, beloved of buskers everywhere except for the fiddly little guitar bit in the chorus. And this is the time of year when we expect the sun to return - except it hasn't quite worked out that way, in London at least, so I'll have to warm you all up with some stonking music with a sunny sort of theme.

In typically perverse style a very cosmopolitan selection for the weekend after St. George's Day! There is some English music, with new albums from The Enid and It Bites live, as well as a blast from the past from Talk Talk, but we've also got a selection of Russian and Eastern European stuff from Oaksenham, Fromuz and Lost World, and some great folky songs from the new Trembling Bells album.

The show kicks off with a European Perspective exclusive in the form of a track from the forthcoming Tinyfish album, The Big Red Spark. Bear in mind that this is a rough mix, prepared for the purposes of completing the album which is to be released in August - but I think you'll agree that it's sounding great, and we eagerly await the final product. Many thanks from the lads for making this song available to play on the show!

The European Perspective #70 - Tea with Dec and Thai with Nick and Dick
« Reply #73 on: May 16, 2010, 03:33:30 AM »
Listen to or download this episode

Not one, but two interview features this week - see how much I love you all and spoil you with my generosity?

First up, a cup of tea with Dec Burke, probably best known to most of you as vocalist and guitarist with Frost*, but also ex-frontman of the excellent Darwin's Radio, who recorded one of the best albums of last year, Template For A Generation, and very shortly to release his first solo album, Destroy All Monsters. Huw and I were lucky enough to hear the whole album during our visit, and we recommend that you head on over to Dec's website - http://www.decburke.com/ - to get a pre-order in as soon as it goes live, hopefully next week. You won't be disappointed.

Another album that I can guarantee will give great listening pleasure is Nick Magnus' Children Of Another God, from which I played a selection of tracks a few weeks back. I had a very pleasant evening at the Thai Square resturant at the Aldwych in London with Nick and Dick Foster, who writes Nick's lyrics - plenty of conversation and very nice food. We talked about the album, songwriting and music in general, and you can hear the results in this week's show - apologies for the sound quality in parts, it was a busy evening in the restaurant. Children Of Another God can be ordered from Nick's website at http://www.magnus-music.com/ - again, an album well worth getting hold of.

All of this together with new music from The Reasoning and Unitopia, a brace of tracks from Multifuse's Journey From The Nesting Place, and a brief diversion into both Dec's and Nick's back-catalogue.

01. Multifuse - Hypnotize (6:58) from Journey To The Nesting Place, 2009
02. Tinyfish - Eat The Ashes (3:18) from Driving All Night, 2008

The European Perspective #71

This week on the European Perspective an interview with Brian Devoil from Twelfth Night, one of the classic eighties bands from the second wave of progressive rock, and currently embarked on their second reunion tour of the UK, culminating in an appearance at The Night Of The Prog in Loreley in September.

Apart from a birthday dedication to a certain Mr. J. Sanders, the rest of the show seems to have taken on a life of its own, after having been blown away by Transatlantic in concert at Shepherd's Bush Empire, with a diversion into Pain Of Salvation's back catalogue, as well as some cuts from their new album, Road Salt One. Also, new music from the excellent Haken, and from The Pineapple Thief.
