The automated feed today:
« on: March 03, 2005, 11:39:23 AM »
It was perfect for my mood!! I had quite a great day and got the chance to listen to a great selection of music while killing a bottle of wine. What more could I expect?

Danke!!  ;D

(I think I need to become a DJ - then I could play my own great music when I feel the need to... ;) ;) )

Yeah Jurg!  Why not?  If you have a few hours a week I'm sure you would build a following in a few weeks!

Indeed!  The more shows we have the better the station does.  By all means, think of a concept and submit a show app form! :)

Could someone explain in a few words what I need to do a show?
That will be the main problem: me and computers...  ::)

You need a computer, a microphone, and a passion for prog! :)

Okay, let's see:

2. HARDWARE & SOFTWARE
Your computer and Internet connection must be fast enough to upload the live audio stream to the server.  High speed cable, DSL, or equivalent is required.
--> I have DSL (flatrate with restricted data volume).

You need the broadcasting software.  PC users use Winamp with an OGG VORBIS plug-in.  MAC users use Real Producer or Helix Producer.
--> I have a PC, use Winamp and can listen to the OGG sound which means I should have that plug-in.

Of course you need a microphone, and headphones are recommended so you don't risk feedback through your speakers.
--> Don't have that. What do you folks use? A headset? Will a cheap one do? What do you recommend?

It is recommended that you have the mIRC chat program.
--> Have that one.

You will also need to be able to transfer files via FTP in order to upload your show archives and promo clips, etc..   We can help you find and configure all the necessary software.
--> Never done anything with FTP before. I could need that help here.
What's the "size" of a show, btw? I'm using DSL with a limited data transfer, so I wonder if that will be a problem.
And I'll have to use mp3's for broadcasting, right? Which means that I have to convert most of my CD collection into mp3's. Which means I'd have to upgrade my PC with more space on my hard drive. Maybe an external hard drive just for the music. Right?

Jurgen, I use a cheap ($25) set of Altec Lansing headphones with microphone attachment.

The external hard drive should work (I'm guessing).

My show archive for Epic Prog last night was an 88 MB file (that's a three hour show).

FTP is a snap. You should be able to download a free client and Shawn can help you use it to connect to the archive server.

Okay, bought a 250 GB internal hard drive today. I'm on my way, slowly but surely. ;)

Very nice! I only have two small drives in my machine (1 80 GB and 1 40 GB), so you have more than twice the storage that I do. Now I'm jealous.  :(

Okay, the hard drive is running. But I "had" to install Windows XP. Windows 98 only recognized about 60 GB. But this way, I can install everything on the new drive and use the old one at the same time.

What program do you use for ripping CDs? And what bitrate?
